[TAKAKA HILL ROAD WORK SHORTLY TO BE BEGUN (SPECIAL TO THE PKESS.i NELSON, March 1 Mr K. J. Holyoake, M.P., has re. ceived a letter from the Minister for * Public "Works, the Hon. J. Bitchefier in answer to his representations that early effect should be given to the" decision of the Main Highways Board to grant £25,000 for the purpose of improvement to the Takaka Hill road. The letter states: "I have to confirm' my recent announcement at that the Main Highways Board has decided to proceed with improvements at an approximate cost of £25,000, fa. eluding the construction of what i« known as the Hawk Crag deviation. It is the board's intention to commence the works at an early date. Provision has been made for the employment of married relief workers on a co operative contract, based on current full-time standard rates."

The district engineer proposes to establish a camp on the deviation and another at Kairuru. They will be about two and a half miles apart and in all probability the camp at Kai. ruru will be erected first. Harmonic Society The Nelson Harmonic Society will shortly commence practice for its next concert, for which Elgar's "The Banner of St. George" has been chosen. Bowls In the final game for the senior championship of the Nelson Bowline Club yesterday, W. Dee (holder) beat H. Coltman after a close game, which went the full 21 heads. Earlier in the day Coltman beat Joe Vitteta in the semi-final, after a splendid game. Both competitors were congratulated by the president, Mr W. J. S. Smith. Supreme Court Mr Justice Kennedy will preside at the quarterly sessions of the Supreme Court at Blenheim and Nelson, opening on March 12 and 19 respectively. Personal Dr. J. P. S. Jarhieson, president of the Nelson Aero Club, left by aero, plane to attend the North Island aero pageant. He will fly home to-morrow Mrs B. R. Cross has returned from an extended holiday with her parents in Gippsland, Victoria. Mrs W. H. Ward, Dominion president of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, will address meetings in the Nelson district, commencing at Richmond on Tuesday next. .
