LYTTELTON HARBOUR AFFAIRS
MEETING OF THE BOARD The Lyttelton Harbour Board met on Saturday morning, the chairman, Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., presiding. In his statement of finance and trade for February, the treasurer (Mr C. H. Clibborn) reported that the receipts totalled £9019 4s Bd, an increase of £llsß 8s 3d, when compared with the receipts for February, 1934. The receipts for the first five months of the present financial year totalled £37,120 19s lOd, as compared with £32,811 10s lOd for the corresponding period of 1933-34, an increase of £4309 9s. The bank book showed the harbour fund to be in credit £4087 0s Bd, and the unpaid items amounted to £672 9s 6d, which would leave the account in credit £3414 lis 2d.The cargo statistics, in tons, were as follows, the figures for February, 1934, being given in parenthesis:—lmports, 31,547 (22,568); exports, 29,694 (22,103); transhipments, 461 (91); total tonnage handled, 61,702 (44,762). The harbourmaster (Captain J. F. Crawford) reported that during February 111 trading vessels, representing 173.283 tons net register, entered the port. In February, 1934, 122 vessels entered the port, representing 159,781 tons net register. There had been a considerable shortage of union labour on the waterfront on several days during the month, owing largely to the number of vessels in port; and many non-unionists found temporary employment.
