* d PICNICS The following picnics were held at Lyttelton on Saturday: Ouruhia School, 50, at Diamond Harbour; Rakaia United Friendly Societies, 300, at Corsair Bay; Heathcote Methodist Sunday School, 50, at Corsair Bay; Redcliffs School, 200, at Diamond Harbour; St. John's Presbyterian Sunday School, Lyttelton. 100, at Quail Island. Bowls A bowling match was held on Saturday afternoon between teams representing the Rakaia Bowling Club and the Lyttelton Bowling Club. Lyttelton won by 38 to 30. Obituary The death occurred at Lyetelton on Saturday morning of Mr Joseph Bradbury, well known as an engineer in coastal steamers and for the last 15 years as engineer of the Peninsula bays steamer John Anderson. Mr Bradbury, who was 64 years of age, was born in Dublin and came out to New Zealand about 35 years ago as an engineer in the New Zealand Shipping Company's first Tekoa. He spent some years on the West Coast in various engineering works at Westport and Greymouth. Then he was for a time in the steamer Taroa, in the Chatham Islands trade, and was next in the Opouri, which was wrecked on the West Coast. He came to Lyttelton about 16 years ago and soon afterwards joined the John Anderson.
Mr Bradbury was a member of the vestry of Holy Trinity Church and of the Kilwinning Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the New Zealand Engineers' Institute. He leaves a widow and three daughters—Mrs R. Larsen, Christchurch, Mrs M. Rbke, Wellington, and Miss K. Bradburv, Lyttelton. The funeral, which was "a Masonic one, took place yesterday afternoon. .Swimming The Lyttelton Men's Amateur Swimming Club held a series of races in the Corsair -Buy bath on Saturday afternoon. The racing was keen and good entries were received. Particular interest was taken in the three events for the schoolboys' championship shield held by St. Joseph School. The winning team this year was the West Lyttelton school, with 31 points. Results: •2-21) Yards Club Championship— A. Torrens 1. L. Combes '2, T. U. Holder 3. Time, taim 7 •i-Ssec. Schoolboys' 50 Yards Championship—C. E. Stanley 1, W. Samson 2, C. Barnes 3. Won by two yards. Time, 9 3-ssec. Xine starters. 25 Yards Breaststroke Championship—C. E. Stanley 1, W. Samson 2, J. Holder 3. Won by three yards. Six starters. 25 Yards Championship—C. G. Stanley 1 \V. Samson 2, J. Holder 3. Won by two yards. Time, 13 3-ssec. Sis starters. Diving Championship—W. Samson 1, J. Holder and A. McDonald (equal) 2. Eight competitors.
The 100 yards, championship of the Lyttelton Ladies' Swimming Club was held at Corsair Bay bath on Saturday afternoon for the Bundy Cup. The> results were as follows: 100 Yards Championship—Jean Morris 1, Jessie Gilray 2, May Stearn 3. Won by two yards. Sis starters. 75 Yards Junior Championship—Jean Morris 1, May Storm 2. Won easily. Three started. 75 Yards Relay Race—No. 3 team (Jessie Gilray, May Stearn, and Rita McDonald) 1, No. 1 team (Mary Piteaithly, Betty Weastoll, and Phyllis Plimmer) 2. Dance The dance band of the R.M.S. Rangitiki will hold a dance in the Excelsior Hall to-night. Supper will be provided, and the latest London dance music will be played.
