CANTERBURY YEOMANRY CAVALRY

DANCE AT TAI TAPU Many visitors from Christchurch were amongst the guests who crowded the Tai Tapu hall last night for the very successful dance arranged by a strong and enthusiastic committee to arouse interest in the activities of A Squadron of the Canterbury Yeomanry. Cavalry. Gaily coloured Hags and bunting decorated the walls, prominence being given to the squadron's flag bearing the motto: "pro socis et patria." The red coats worn by the officers added to the gaiety of the scene. Members of the committee had made complete and excellent arrangements for the entertainment, and are to be congratulated on the success of their efforts. The committee was: Sir R. Tallott presiding. Those present were Mesdames C. Mcintosh, C. Briggs, A. Ryde, G. Overend, T. Jackson, A. Fidler, J. Gilbert, C. Judson, Whitham, and Miss M. Whitham. The balance-sheet was considered

satisfactory. The president said that the branch was in need of funds in order to continue its work during the winter months, and urged members to invite their friends to join the branch. A vote of sympathy was passed with Mrs S. Wood, in her illness. COMING-OF-AGE PARTIES An enjoyable party was held to celebrate the coming-of-age of Arthur, only son of Mr and Mrs R. Sutherland, Montreal street. Amongst those present were Mr and Mrs R. Sutherland, Mr A. Sutherland, Mr and Mrs A. Brennan, Mr and Mrs R. C. Hocking, Mr and Mrs S. Claridge, Mr Johns, Mesdames T. Findlay, M. Metcalf (Wellington), D. Forsey (Waikari), Misses A. Craib, M. Quigley, P. Hocking, V." Hocking, N. Claridge, M. Claridge, W. Stevens, P. Beecham, and Mr Johns.

A party was held at the home of Mrs S. J. Whiting ("Kensit" Dorie) to celebrate the coming-of-age of her youngest son, Mr M. Whiting. Relatives and friends were present from Christchurch, Orton, Ruapuna, and .the surrounding districts. The time was spent in games and competitions. A solo by Miss May Allan (Ruapuna) and a humorous recitation given by Miss Winifred Smith (Cashmere Hills) were greatly appreciated. A pleasant party was held at the home of Mr and Mrs R. J. Roberts (Hornby) to celebrate the coming-of-age of their elder daughter, Elizabeth. The time was spent in games and competitions, the latter being won by Misses Lallie Lloyd and Betty Roberts and Mr B. Cooke'. Those present were Mesdames R. J. Roberts, F. Musgrove, A. E. Whale, A. M. Mackie, Misses Betty and Gwladys Roberts, Gwen Musgrove, Lallie Lloyd, Jean Lloyd, Mavis Whyte, M. Davis, Peggy Robinson, N. Drake, M. Kelly, Messrs R. J. Roberts, F. Musgrove, S. McMillan, R. W. Brown, D. Musgrove, A. Musgrove, R. Cooke, J. Dann, J. Kinghorn, E. Roberts, D. Roberts, and A. Roberts. PARTY AT HALSWELL At the home of Mrs J. Templeton (Lincoln road, Halswell) a bridge party was held on Thursday afternoon to assist the needlework stall at the garden fete to be held in-the vicarage grounds, Halswell, on March 9. Prize-winners were Mesdames McGovern, Gardiner, and B. Templeton. Those present were Mesdames Atkinson, Buncombe, Guiney, Fox, Cossar, Vizer, Thompson, Boon, Curtis, McGovern, Petrie, Witte, Gardiner, Tuck, Wendlebourn, B. Templeton, J. Templeton, Misses Cossar. Boon, and Mr J. Templeton. GUILD OF HELP A well-attended meeting of the Guild of Help to the Community of the Sacred Name was held at Cashmere House on Thursday afternoon. Besides members of the Cashmere Hills circle, Mrs Cracroft Wilson welcomed about 20 members of the new circle formed at Sydenham, with Mrs Latter as secretary. Miss Sanders (acting-general secretary) was present, and Mother Eleanor spoke of the aims and objects of the community. From her account of the many and varied duties the sisters undertake, members realised what an extensive work is being done in this diocese by the Community of the Sacred Name. Afternoon tea was served at the conclusion of the meeting.
