WOMEN'S DIVISION OF FARMERS' UNION

—__* mid-canterbury executive All the branches were represented at a very successful meeting of the Mid-Canterbury Provincial Executive of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, held yesterday afternoon. The president (Mrs F. Johnston) presided. A letter was received from the matron of the Ashburton Public Hospital (Miss E. J. Watt) conveying thanks for the cushions sent by the executive for the use of the patients in the women's sun room. It was decided to make a donation of three chairs for the same room at the institution.

Details of the interpvovincial conference to be held at Ashburton on March 8 were further considered, and it was stated that 200 women would be present. A vote of thanks was passed to the Canterbury Automobile Association for the use of its room for meetings. v SOUTH CANTERBURY BRANCH Mrs B. E. Evans presided over a meeting of the South Canterbury executive of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union.

Correspondence was received from the South Canterbury Electric Power Board advising the division of reductions in power charges. The secretary was instructed to write thanking the board for its information. Several members expressed the opinion that if it were possible to reduce the installation charges, which were considered prohibitive, many more country homes would be connected with the system. It was agreed to arrange for an inter-provincial conference to be held at Ashburton next month. It was decided to give prizes as under to children collecting the largest number of white butterflies before March 31:— First prize 10s, second prize 7s 6d, third prize ss, fourth prize 2s 6d, fifth prize 2s 6d, sixth prize 2s 6d. SPRINGFIELD BRANCH A meeting of the Springfield branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held in the hall with Mrs R. Milliken presiding. A motion of- sympathy was passed with Mrs H. McKeown in her recent bereavement. Mrs R. Milliken gave a report of the recent conference held in Christchurch. An invitation was extended to all members to attend a group garden party, to be held at Oxford on March 5. A competition for scones was won by Miss Phoebe Reid 1, Mrs Duncan 2, and Mrs R. Milliken 3. At the March meeting, the competition will be for the best jar of apricot jam. and the best hand-made handkerchief. There will also be a sales table.
