WEDDINGS
BAILEY—HARKESS At the Durham Street Methodist Church, the wedding was celebrated recently, of Olive, only daughter of Mr and Mrs E. A. Harkess, Port Levy, Banks Peninsula, to Edward, youngest son of Mr F. G. Bailey (Papanui), and the late Mrs Bailey. The Rev. W. Grigg performed the ceremony, and Mr Melville Lawry was the organist. The bride wore a frock of windswept satin made on long fitting lines to the knees, then fully flared to the ground. The sleeves were puffed to the elbows, and fitted to form points over the hands, and the square neckline was softened with a spray of orange blossom. Her embroidered net veil was held in place by a coronet of orange blossom, and in her shower bouquet white lilies and begonias were arranged with carnations. Mr Harkess escorted his daughter, who was attended by Miss K. Ellenberger. The bridesmaid's frock was of cream silk organdie patterned in blue, and she wore also a blue picture hat and carried a bouquet of flowers to tone. Mr Calvin Mcintosh (Le Bon's Bay) was best man. Mrs Harkess wore an ensemble of navy crepe de chine and a widebrimmed navy hat, and carried crimson flowers. Mrs A. Ware (Okain's Bay), the bridegroom's sister, wore a blue floral georgette frock with a wide brimmed straw hat, her flowers being of pink and mauve asters and begonias. Mrs R. Erikson, godmother of the bride, wore a smart brown ensemble and a Bangkok straw hat to tone. The bride travelled in a brown crepe de chine ensemble and a Bangkok straw hat to match. .JOHNSTONE—KILPATRICK The wedding took place on Wednesday at St. John's Presbyterian Church, Greymouth, of Miss Urba (Billie) Kilpatrick, younger daughter of the late Mrs Kilpatrick and of Mr A. Kilpatrick, of Boddytown, to Mr Joseph Montgomery Johnstone, of Christchurch. The Rev. H. R. Fell performed the ceremony, which was fully choral.
The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Mabel Kilpatrick (Christchurch and little Beth Franklin (Christchurch). Mr Keith Kent was best man. Mr and Mrs J. M. Johnstone left later for Christchurch, where they will make their future home. ATKINSON—BOWIE A recent wedding at St. Mary's Church, Timaru, was that of Elizabeth Wanaka, third daughter of Mrs E. Bowie (Wai-iti road) and the late Major R. R. Bowie, to Donald, elder son of the late Mr C. Atkinson and of Mrs Atkinson (Cashmere Hills). The ceremony was performed by Archdeacon H. W. Monaghan, and Mr A. W. V. Vine was organist. The church was decorated with pink, blue, and cream flowers. The bride was given away by her brother, Mr Michael Bowie. She wore a trained frock of pink stiffened chiffcn. mounted on taffeta, and patterned in a floral design in pink and blue tonings. The high yoke in front was outlined with a pleated frill which continued over the shoulders to the waist at the back and was finished with a swathed sash of rose taffeta. Kilting also trimmed the long skirt. Clusters of pink taffeta flowers were arranged under the brim of her pink leghorn hat, and she carried pink begonias. Miss Peggy Bowie, who attended her sister, wore a pink organdie frock patterned with blue and pink flowers. The frock was mounted on powderblue taffeta and was moulded to the knees, a deep flounce being edged with two small frills. The bodice had wide upstanding frills set at the shoulders in place of sleeves, and a ifoelt of powder-blue velvet matched the band on her leghorn hat. She carried a bouquet of delphiniums and begonias. Mr Edgar Bowie (Christchurch) acted as best man. A reception was held at the Grand Hotel. The bride's mother, who received the guests, was wearing an ensemble of black and white patterned georgette and a black hat. Her bouquet was of mauve zinnias. Mrs Atkinson, mother of the bridegroom, wore a frock of navy marocain embossed satin, Irish lace relieving the bodice. Her navy velour hat was finished with a feather mount, and red begonias were arranged in her bouquet. Mrs W. Irvine (Aylesbury), sister of the bride, wore a dahlia-red cotele frock and a straw hat to match. A navy and white patterned crepe de chine frock and a wide navy hat were worn by Mrs W. J. of the bride, wore a wine and biskra figured pebble crepe frock and a wine coloured hat. Miss Jean Bowie, sister of the bride, wore a frock of powderblue organdie and a leghorn hat. The bride travelled in an ensemble of navy blue silk crepe embossed with navy and white silk thread. Her hat to match was trimmed in front with narrow white rucking. TENNIS MATCH An enjoyable tennis match was held recently at the Beckenham courts, between the Beckenham and Opawa Clubs. The games, which were keenly contested, were won by Beckenham by eight sets to seven. The players were Mesdames Iggo, Gibson, Thompson, Craighead, Lord, Nelson, Allison, Durant, Clay, Spence, Stone, and Miss Keith.
