A suggestion that a centenary regatta should be held in Auckland in 1940 was made by Captain H. H. Sergeant, harbourmaster, at the presentation this week of prizes won at the Auckland Anniversary regatta on January 29. In five years' time, said Captain Sergeant, Auckland would celebrate its centenary, and he thought the regatta committee should hold a regatta second to none in the southern hemisphere. The Mayor, Mr G. W. Hutchison, said he fully agreed with Captain Sergeant. The idea was an excellent one. A yacht race could be arranged to start in Australia and finish at Auckland. In addition races for Maori canoes and whaleboats could be held. He suggested that a sub-committee should be formed at an early date with the object of creating a special fund for carrying out the proposed regatta.
