PERSONAL Recent guests at Haeremai, Sumner, were Mrs S. H. Clarkson, Mrs Wright, Mr and Mrs Hoggard (Dunedin), Mr Simpkinson, Miss Freda Jennings, The Gift Clock Fair progress has been made with the erection of the base and tower of the borough clock. Framework and steelwork for the construction of the lower part of the tower have been erected, and a stonemason has prepared a considerable quantity of rock to be used in the construction of the tower. Life Saving The Sumner Life-Saving Club has again occupied second place to the New Brighton Club for the Canterbury Surf Association's pennant, awarded to the club scoring the most points in s inter-club events during the season. The New Brighton Club has secured a place in every event' held. Nevertheless the Sumner Club can look back with satisfaction at a very successful season in which its members figured on a number of occasions in creditable rescues.

To-morrow afternoon the Sumner Club is holding three events, the Mayoral Cup, a four-man alarm event, the junior cup, a single-handed rescue event with resuscitation, and a senior single-handed rescue event with resuscitation. Taylor's Mistake will also hold a competition to-morrow, the Archbold Cup, a four-man event. Golf Mr F. J. Pender presided over a committee meeting of the Richmond Hill Golf Club, held after the annual meeting on Thursday evening. Appointments to the various sub-com-mittees were made as follows: Greens committee, Messrs V. E. Hamilton, A. A. Cheshire, and E. T. Salvesen; match committee, Messrs R. H. Booth, F. J. Glackin, and J. S. B. Bruges: entertainments committee, Messrs C. A. Rattray, H. L. Whiteman, F. J. Pender, and J. D. Lawrence. The match committee was empowered to draw up a tentative pro-

gramme for the season, to be submitted at the next committee meeting on March 12. Discussion on a number of subjects, including the celebration of the club's jubilee and the securing of some insurance cover against accidents to players on the course, was deferred until the next committee meeting. Sailing A and B class races will be sailed at Redcliffs this afternoon by the Christchurch Sailing and Power-Boat Club. Redcliffs School Picnic The Redcliffs School picnic will be held to-day at Diamond Harbour. The children are looking forward to the outing, which includes a trip to Lyttelton by bus and then by launch to the picnic ground. Good Templars In the absence of the chief templar, Bro. W. Sexton, Sister F. De la Roche, presided over the regular meeting of the Sumner Pride Lodge of Juvenile Good Templars. Bro. Ford reported on the meeting of the band of hope union which he had attendee! as the lodge's representative. He also announced that the annual picnic would be held in the Botanic Gardens on March 23, at 10 a.m. The Ever Onward Lodge, Redcliffs, extended a hearty invitation to give a short programme at their meeting on Monday, March 11. It was decided to accept the invitation. The superintendent of junior works stated that he had met the grand superintendent on his way home to Auckland. At Lyttelton he had stated that all the temples down south desired him to convey greetings to the Sumner Lodge. He paid a high compliment to the Sumner Pride and the Lily of Sydenham Lodges. The superintend-

ent announced that it had been decided to hold a cake stall, a concert, and card evenings in aid of the funds of the lodge, during the winter evenings. This would assist the dele-' gates to go to the conference. A church parade would be held in two weeks' time. It was decided to accord Mr C. Sherrard a vote of thanks for the pledge cards forwarded. Athletic Club The committee of the Sumner Athletic Club has decided to hold a sports meeting at St. Leonard's square on Wednesday, March 6, at 6.30 p.m. The following programme was decided upon:—Junior handicap for the cup presented by Mr J. F. Barnford, 800 yards, 100 yards boys' race, 400 yards junior boys' race, 100 yards girls' race. The entries will close with the secretary, Mr J. B. Pye, on Monday, March 4. District High School At the recent successful card evening heid in the Town Hall for the funds of the Sumner District High School, the prizes were won as follows: —Highest score, Mr G. A. Webb; hidden number, Mrs L. T. Bell-Syer; consolation, Mr R. C. N. Hill; 500 highest score, A. Urquhart; hidden number, Mrs Radcliffe; consolation, Mr Radcliffe. The box of chocolates given by Mrs Fountain Barber was won by Mrs E. Thomas.
