SIEGE OF LADYSMITH RECALLED
—❖ DEATH OF WIDOW OK SIR CKOltia- WHITE (Received March 1, 7 p.m.) LONDON, February 28. The death occurred of Lady White, widow of Sir George White, defender of Ladysmith, on the thirty-fifth anniversary of the relief of the town. The news reached General Gough while he was placing a wreath on Sir George White's statue in the West End. [Early in the T3oer War the British forces suffered reverses, and General Sir George White, with a force which, was heavily outnumbered, was bcseiged in Ladysmith, Natal. One of the first tasks undertaken by General Sir Fvcdvcrs Buller. who commanded the British expeditionary force, was the relief of Ladysmith. In this operation he was successful, but only after heavy fighting. It was the first important success of the British army in the war.)
