TASMAN AIR SERVICE

Plans of Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith PREPARED TO START THIS YEAR (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH —COPYRIGHT.) (Received February 28, 8.40 p.m.) SYDNEY, February 28. Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith announces that he is prepared to start a trans-Tasman air service between Sydney and New Zealand if he is given a reasonable subsidy, and allowed to pick his own machines. He says a service could be started this year, between Sydney and New Plymouth. The journey would occupy eight hours, the service to carry mails only until its safety was established. Sir Charles indicated that British machines were too slow for the schedule he contemplated, and mentioned the names of several American types in the 200 miles an hour class. He said he could use either a land aeroplane or a flying-boat, according to the financial backing forthcoming. A bi-weekly service each way is suggested.
