PIG-STICKING
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS.
Sir,— May I through your paper make a suggestion to the committee of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association? Lately I have read some very interesting accounts of pig-sticking in India, and it seems a wonderfully exciting—and, provided the boar is tit and well trained— thrilling sport. Way not hold a pig-sticking competition at the annual Agricultural and Pastoral Show at Addington in place of the extremely unfair and to say the least of it boring exhibition of tent-pegging. I am sure that if any of the backcountry run-holders were approached they would be only too willing to supply the association with any number of young boars. I would suggest that the event be run in heats of two, as more might be dangerous in such a small area. Also if the entry fee were made reasonably high it would serve the double purpose of preventing too many entries and paying some of the expenses for transport and keep of boars I do not think there would be any need for prize money at present l feel sure there are plenty of sporting gentlemen in this very sporting country of ours who would be only too willing to present a cup for the event. -Yours, etc., WAIp _ February 27, 1935. [Mr M E. Lyons, secretary of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, said yesterday that the official programme of the annual show included the following military events: Best section over hurdles, a Llovd Lindsay competition, and a Victoria Cross race. As the Defence Department had not been able to supply some of the gear for the Victoria Cross race at the last show a tentpegging event had been substituted at the last moment. This event was not by any means a permanent part ot the programme.]
