ST. ANDREW'S COLLEGE

♦ MEETING OP PARENTS' ASSOCIATION The annual general meeting of the St. Andrew's College Parents' Association was held at the college on Wednesday evening. Mr A. L. Cropp presided over a gathering of about 90 parents of past and present pupils. The chairman referred to the death of the patron. Professor J. Macmillan Brown, and a resolution of sympathy was passed. In proposing the adoption of the report and accounts, Mr Cropp stated that as the representation was not very large at present the executive had been unable to do a great deal. He hoped that from now on the membership would increase, particularly as the association could be of great benefit to St. Andrew's College. The executive bad secured a representative on the Board of Governors and had given the sum of £lO to the college to assist toward providing bursaries. Now that the economic conditions were definitely improving, he expected that many parents would join. He referred to the successes of Mr W. F. Monk and Mr W. L. Barvy, and said that the college should be proud of two such students. Mr J. B. Mawson, the headmaster of the college, gave a very interesting address and explained the various courses that were offered—general, commercial, and agriculture. He explained the subjects in each course and made particular reference to the fact that English was required in every case. Reading: was a most important factor and the library of the college was being overhauled. He was endeavouring to obtain a hobby room for boys and he would like to see more interest taken in subjects such as physiology and biology. The college orchestra was

now very weak, he said, and he urged parents to have their boys taught a musical instrument, if possible. He referred to the assistance he had received from the association and stated that He was sure that its co-operation would prove of immense value to the college. Seventeen new members were elected at the meeting and the following officers and committee were appointed:—Patron, Mr R. E. McDougall; president. Mr A. L. Cropp: vice-presi-dent.:, Messrs W. J. Hunter and Peter Kennedy; secretary-treasurer, Mr H. R. Best; committee. Messrs F. Cartwright, W. Goss, jun., F. D. Sargent, A. C. Bretherton, and T. M. Charters; auditor. Mr S. L. Wright. Recommendations were made for sub-committees as follows:—Membership and students' enrolment committee. Mesdames Stanley Wilkinson, Peler Kennedy, J. W. Graham, and W. J. Hunter. Boys' social committee, Mesdames W. H. Downer, A. Webb, A. E. G. Lyttle, and A. L. Cropp. Entertainments committee. Mesdames S. R. Wright and A. C. Bretherton.
