* GREYMOUTH MUSIC EXAMINATIONS (SPECIAL TO THE PRESS ) GREYMOUTH, February 28. The theory results of the December examination, conducted by the Trinity College of Music, London, at Greymouth, are as follows: — Art of Teaching and Rudiments of Music—lda Clayton (Convent), complete; Tessie McSherry (Convent), paper work only. Ida Clayton, who passed in Associate violin at the practical examination held last August, has now completed the requirements for the A.T.C.L. diploma. Intermediate Honours —Florence E. Gale (Miss M. Coburn), 86; Joy M. Dickson (Miss M. Topliss), 80. Intermediate Pass—Jeari Horrack 'Convent), 67. Junior Honours—Zita Austin (Convent), 99; Lilah Hunter (Convent), 99; Marcia Lowe (Convent), 92; Betty Anderson (Convent), 91. Miner Injured Serious injuries to the left eye were sustained by Charles Morgan, an employee of the Wallsend mine, when he was struck by a drill. Morgan, a resident of Cobden, received attention from Dr. A. W. Wilkinson, and left later for Christchurch to receive treatment from an eye specialist. Personal In view of her approaching marriage to Mr J. Truman, the stall' of Truman's, Ltd., met Miss Verna Wise, and Mr Parker made a presentation of an electric iron and a tea-set. Mr J. Truman replied. Mr A. P. Penman will leave to-day on a visit to Christchurch. Mr L. Carruthers has returned from Timaru. HOKITIKA MUSICAL SOCIETY ISI'JSCIAL TO TUB I'KESS.) HOKITIKA, February 28. A well-attended meeting in the Soldiers' Hall last evening decided to form a Hokitika Musical Society. It was resolved that "The aims of the society be to extend and deepen the knowledge of music through the medium of recitals by visiting artists and by such other means as shall from time to time be deemed expedient." The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr D. J. Evans; pre-
sident, Mr J. L. Menzies; vice-presi-dent Mrs B. L. Wilson; secretary, Mr vV Lindsay; treasurer, Mr S. H. Dromgoole; committee, Mrs Jordon, Miss A. Duff, Miss A. Daly. Miss E. Dale, Rev G. A. Naylor, Messrs R. Tennent, P. Mulrennan. and J. B. Ward. The annual subscription was fixed at 12s, entitling members to two tickets for each of four recitals and to such other benefits as might be provided. A recital will be arranged at an early date. High School Committee The monthly meeting of the Hokitika District High School Committee was held last evening. Present: Messrs A C. Armstrong (chairman), J. J. Breeze, W. H. Shannon, R. J. Pedder, H W. R. Sweney, A. McDougall, W. E. Richards, J. Conning, the Rev. G. A. Naylor, and the rector (Mr J. L. Menzies) . The new enrolments in the secondary department numbered 52, of whom 28 were from outlying schools. Six pupils attending the secondary department were boarders. The total number of pupils at present attending from outlying districts was 48. Mr Sweney was appointed to attend the meeting of the West Coast School Committees' Association. It was decided to thank the Akaroa District High School Committee for information supplied about their alti-
tude towards high school endowment funds. It was decided to acknowledge with thanks a donation by the Ross committee of £1 towards the purchase of football jerseys for the Westland primary schools' Newman Shield team. It was decided to send a letter of appreciation to the Canterbury Education Board for the renovations that have been made in the school. It was resolved to approach Mr R. Wild, a member of the Education Board, in an endeavour to have some arrangements made for bus services and assistance for country pupils. New Water Supply At a special meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council on Tuesday, evening, Professor R. A. Campbell, consulting engineer, of Christchurch, was present, and plans for a new system of supplying the borough with water from Lake Kanieri were discussed. It was stated that the present system was 25 years old, and although figures showed that the annual cost of upkeep had not increased in recent years, the supply was insufficient to
meet present-day demands. Professor Campbell and the borough foreman (Mr F. W. Chesterman) yesterday inspected the present pipeline and the proposed new route. A report will later be made to the council. REEFTON PERSONAL (BPBCIAI. TO THE PRESS.I REEFTON, February 28. Misses S. Dobson and M. Austin have returned from a holiday in Blenheim and Christchurch. Mr S. Anisy, of Greymouth, has been transferred to the Railway staff at Reef ton. Obituary The death occurred at the Reefton Hospital of Mr Daniel O'Leary, a well-known farmer of Totara Flat. Mr O'Leary, who was 74 years of age, was a native of Ireland, and came to New Zealand many years ago. He is survived by a widow and family. Agricultural and Pastoral Association Mr W. S. Pratt presided Over a meeting of the Inangahua Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Mr Pratt reported that the canvassers had been fairly successful, and the entries were very good. The tender of Mr B. H. Winchester was accepted for the publican's booth. No tender was received for the tea rooms, and it was left to the secretary to arrange. The following stewards were appointed:—"Vegetables, Messrs Campbell, Discaciati, and the Rev. W. Bell; fruit and flowers, Miss Arnott, Mrs Pratt, Mrs Discaciati, Mr Austin, and Mr W. Winchester; home industries, Mrs Campbell and Miss I. Kearns; needlework, Mr and Mrs T. Patterson, Misses O'Brien and Archer; baby show, Mr D. Panckhurst; sheep competition, Mr C. H. Cleaver. The entries in the cooking section are a record for the show.
