• ♦ ATHLETICS SUCCESSFUL EVENING MEETING .'SPKCIAL TO THE PRESS.I BLENHEIM, February 28. At the Show Grounds last evening, the Blenheim Athletic and Cycling Club held a successful sports meeting. There was a large attendance, including many visiting firemen. All the events were keenly contested and some splendid racing was seen. An event that caused much interest was an exhibition of whippet racing put on by Mr R. J. Waters with his team of whippets. Following are the results of the main events: One Mile Cycling Club Championship—JJ. Boyce 1. C. Morrison 2. J. Palatchie 3. One Mile and a Half Cycling Handicap—R. Boyce 1. F. Rodgerson 2, Fireman R. Bunz 3. Two Mile Cycling Handicap—R. Connolly 1. Fireman Lockington 2, fireman Bunz 3. 100 vards Footrace, Club ChampionshiD—R. Chandler 1, E. Stretch 2, R. Wilson 3. 220 yards Handicap—W. Ruffell 1, J. Bourke 2, J. Beirne 3. 440 yards Handicap—Fireman Steele 1, Fireman Morris 2, V. Barratt 3. Picnic A most enjoyable picnic was held to-day as part of the week's entertainment for the visiting firemen and officials. A train left at 9 o'clock this rooming conveying a large crowd to Picton. where the visitors were given morning tea on the foreshore. The morning which was dull and overcast changed to a typical Marlboroueh summer day, the afternoon especially being gloriously fine. Shortly after midday everybody boarded the Tamahine and a long cruise was taken past Shin Cove round Long Island and back to Picton. More than 600 visitors made the trip, and a most enjoyable time was spent. The visitors were particularly impressed with the beauty of the Sounds and many expressed their intention of returning at some future time for a holiday there. Women's Institute The monthly meeting of the Blenheim branch of the Women's Institute was held at St. Andrew's Hall this afternoon, Mrs A. C. Pattie presiding. There was a full attendance of members. A competition arranged by the gardening circle attracted many entries, and the display of flowers was excellent. Miss Lewis, matron of the Wairau Hospital, gave a very interesting lecture, choosing for her subject "A Day in London." An enjoyable afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Mrs W. Martin, past president, on the eve of her departure from Blenheim, was thanked by the president for the great work she had done for the institute and was presented with a hand bouquet as a small token of esteem from all members. The Marlborough Club The annual meeting of the Marlborough Club was held last evening, the president, Dr. J. F. Bennett, presiding over a large gathering. The balancesheet for the year ending December 31. 1934, showed the club to be in a very satisfactory financial position. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Dr. J. F. Bennett; vice-president. Mr Malcolm McKenzie; treasurer. Mr H. L. Jackson; trustee, Mr H. E. Fuller; committee. Messrs D. F. Fleming. F. Mogridge, George Neville. J. O'Leary, C. R. Rabbits, W. Thornber: auditor, Mr R. Wanden; secretary, Mr F. B. Farmar. After the meeting, Dr Bennett welcomed delegates from the various fire brigades attending the demonstrations, and visitors and members joined together in a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Swimming The Blenheim Swimming Club held « successful swimming carnival Ifipt evening in ideal weather. There was a large attendance and all the events were followed with keen interest.
