The store lamb entry was also a big one, and good lambs tor putting on fattening feed f oid very firmly. Fat lambs sold at up to export schedule of 7£d per lb, and butchers' sorts slightly more. A smaller fat sheep entry sold at a sharp advance in prices for good ewes, and the best beef also showed an improvement Practically every department of stock sold at rates from par to tie)ll>r lhan last, week. STORE LAMBS The it ore lamb yarding was again, very heavy, but the sale was a freer one tiian last week, due doubtless to the break in the long spell of dry weather which has brought about a much better outlook for the winter. Included in the yarding was another big entry of station drafts, but the proportion of better-class sheep was much bigger than it was last week. A «reat deal of interest was taken in the sale, and prices showed a slight improvement. For the better quality iambs prices were up on the previous sale by up to Is a head. The top puce was 16s sd, which was secured for : line of 96 three-quarterbred mixed-sex lambs of excellent quality sent in by Mr W. Hyde, of Cat Hills, Cheviot. STOKE SHEEr The store sheep sale, for which there was a much bigger entry than there has been at any previous market this >ear. opened well and for good soundmouth ewes, the entry of which was rather limited, there was a keen demand at values a little above those ruling last week. As the sale progressed, however, there was a falling off in interest, and toward the end it began to drag. Prices all round were about on a par with those of the previous sale. Included in the yarding was a good many pens of very old ewes, which sold fairly well con--idering the condition of them. There -'.as also a good sprinkling of young vheep. and anything outstanding was keenly sought. A line of .113 ewes t-cnt in from Hawarden made 31s Id. Only a few pens of wethers came forward. and they were not a very attractive lot. As most of them came on very late in the sale not a great deal of "interest was taken in them, and consequently several of the pens were pp.sseo. Values wore: Extia good two-tooth three-quarter-bred ewes. 31s Id. Good iwo-toolh three-quarterbred, to 27,s 3d. Medium two-tooth three-quarter-bred. 22s 3d to 245. Good two-tooth Corriedale. 30s. FAT LAMBS A medium entry of fat lambs met with a spirited sale. Quality was moderate, many lines showing the effect of the long spell of dry weather. One of the leading export firms, as last week, was not represented in the competition. Freezing lambs sold round about the schedule rate of 7Ad per lb, but this price was exceeded for the small proportion of heavy lambs suitable for the local trade. These made up to fid in some cases. A feature of the entry was three big lambs by Dorset Horn rams from Romney ewes, which would probably dress near 701b. They were sold by Free Holmes, and made the record price for this season of 40s 6d. Best price for a line was 29s 4d. secured for 14 sold on account of J. Schaffery (Inchbonnie) and for a pen of seven of a line of 82 sent forward by J. J. O'Regan (Inangahua). There were a number of other lines of West Coast lambs, which made good prices. The entry totalled 3600 head, compared with 3800 last week. Values were:— Show lambs, to 40s 3d. Extra prime heavy lambs, 27s to 29s 4d. Prime heavy lambs, 24s to 26s 6d. Medium-weight prime lambs, 21s to 23s 6d. Light lambs, 17s to 20s 6d. Store lambs, 13s 6d to 16s 6d. FAT CATTLE The entry in the fat cattle pens comprised 450 head, compared with 410 the preceding week. There was a much better display in the matter of quality. The showers in various districts during the last few weeks have given a fillip to growth which no doubt was responsible for the fresher appearance of most of the cattle. Some good truck lots came from the Peninsula, and there were also some attractive North Canterbury station lines. While there was still a heavy proportion of low-conditioned cows, there was a better showing of the meatier breeds. The market was very firm for all good sorts, which sold belter than last week by 10s a head. Medium cattle were little changed, but the tag-enders were quitted at practically any price a buyer was prepared to give. The market concluded firmly for all good cattle, the advance noted being maintained to the conclusion of the sale. Top price of the sale was £ll 7s 6d for a steer sold on account of D. L. Lott (Lees Valley) but the best average of the day was secured by G. S. Steele (Port Levy), a truck lot of seven making a fraction under 10 guineas. A client, sold a truck lot of nine heifers, which averaged £7 13s. Hay (Pigeon Bay) topped the heifer section at £9 7s 6d for a very prime heifer. Best steer and heifer beef sold at up to 25s 6d x>er 1001b, good from 21s 6d to 245, heavy from 18s 6d to 20s, medium from 16s 6d to 18s, secondary from 14s to 16s, and rough down to lis per 1001b. Good small calves Were in short supply. The sale was a bright one at last week's rates. Top price was £5 16s. The season's first draft of 16 September calves from the New Zealand and Australian Land Company (Hampden; averaged £3 4s Id. Values were:— Best runners, £3 10s to £5 10s. Medium runners, £2 to £3 ss. Good vealers, 35s to 455. Small calves, 12s to 255. STORE CATTLE There was a small entry of store cattle, which contained no pens of straight lines. It was comprised mostly of old cows, the prospects of feed coming away doubtless being a factor in the absence of better sorts. As there was little to attract buyers, the sale had little life in it. Cows made from 10s to 255, potting bulls 40s to £3 15s, and breeding bulls to 30s. DAIRY CATTLE The entry of dairy cattle comprised 56 head. Heavy baconers, £3 to £3 7.-: tid. | Extra heavy baconers, to £3 Hs 6d. Average price per lb, sld to 61 d. Porkers, 35s to 38s 6d. I Heavy porkers, 40s to 46s 6d. Average price per lb, 6d to 6Jci. STORE PIGS The entry of store pigs was a large one. comprising mostly slips and small stores. There were a few pens of large stores forward, and these met with keen competition.
