—*— RANGIORA PERSONAL Mr A. E. Golding has returned from a holiday spent in the south. Mr J. A. McHarrie, who for the last two years has been overseer for the Public Works Department of the tar-sealing work on the main north road in North Canterbury, has been transferred to Ashburton, where he will superintend the work of tar-seal-ing the Ashburton-Hinds-Rangitata main highway. Borough Water Supply Since Saturday the depth of water in the borough water supply well has risen 13£ inches, and the total depth of water in the well yesterday without the pumps running was sft lOin. The heavy rain-which has been experienced in the back country during the last week has been responsible for the rise, which has been a steady one at the rate of four and a half inches a day. The work of excavating a pumping chamber in which to instal the motor and pump to draw the water from the 14-inch auxiliary bore, is being proceeded with. It is intended that the chamber should be from 18 to 20 feet below the ground level and already from 10 to 12 feet has been completed. At the last meeting of the Rangiora Borough Council it was resolved that the electric light and gas committee be called together when the bore had been cleaned out and the work on the excavating of the chamber was well under way, to decide whether the level of the main well warranted going ahead with the concreting of the chamber and the installation of the pump in the auxiliary well, with a view to supplementing the main supply as soon as possible.
The committee met early last evening and inspected both the main and the auxiliary wells. The committee .subsequently agreed not to proceed further with the work on the auxiliary bore in the meantime as the level of the Hvatcr in the main well was now rising. If within the next few weeks there is a drop in the well, the completion of the auxiliary well will be considered. Druids' Lodge The quarterly summoned meeting of the Druids' Lodge was held on Monday evening, Bro. J. Mcßrearty presiding. A motion of sympathy was passed to Bro. J. Hannan, of Waipara, on the death of his wife. Sick pay amounting to £2 10s and quarterly accounts totalling £O9 19s were passed for payment. Loyal Rangiora Lodge The quarterly summoned meeting of the Loyal Rangiora Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., was held on Monday night, the N.G., Sister B. M. Cooke, presiding over a good attendance. Two members' claims for payment of the maternity allowance were approved. The balance-sheet for the year ended November 30 was submitted by the secretary (Bro. J. A. Ivory) and was considered satisfactory. The sick and funeral fund showed contributions amounting to £771 Is Id, while £IOOB 5s was disbursed as sick pay and £SO for funeral allowances respecting the death of one member and two members' wives. In the management fund income totalled £'2oß 10s lOd (contributions £lßll 0s 10d, entrance fees £1 7s 6d, and hall rent £25 2s 0d) and payments £244 4s G<l. Contributions to the medical fund amounted to £471 14s 2d. payments for medical attention totalling £387 Is 7d, and for medicine £B7 6s (id. Payments to the United Friendly Societies' Dispensary for free hospital beds totalled £145 Is 9d, contributions on this account amounting to £149 ss. A sum of £232 8s was credited to the surplus fund as interest and from this fund £lB4 14s 2d was paid on account of the contributions of members over CO years of age, leaving a balance of £4210 19s 4d. Interest amounting to £ll was added to the benevolent fund, grants to members on account of contributions totalling £32 Is Bd, and leaving a balance of £199 4s lOd in the fund. Nineteen claims for maternity allowances were paid, the amount of £IOB being refunded by the National Provident Fund. The assets of the lodge were shown at £4757, the principal items being mortgages £3IOO, Government debentures £BOO, land and buildings £385 16s 6d, and cash £145 7s Id. The auditors' report submitted by Bro. J. Cooke, was of a satisfactory nature.
The secretary reported that the membership stood at 438. During the year 11 members were initiated, three died, one left by clearance, and 16 by arrears. The usual committees were elected, and the retiring auditor, Bro. E. H. Trollope, was re-elected. Bros. W. Gardner, C. R. Golding, E. H. Trollope, J. Cooke, S. F. Minchington, and A. H. Miles were elected to represent the lodge at the Ashley District Conference on Saturday. Bro. W. Smith was appointed tyler for the conference. Bowls The annual inter-borough match between Rangiora and Kaiapoi for the Mcintosh shield will be played on the Kaiapoi Club's green on Saturday. The Rangiora rinks are as follows: W. E. Barton, C. Devlin, W. Steele, H. Kinley, A. Woodward, R. Giles. In their match with Horrelville at Rangiora on Saturday, the Rangiora Club's junior team will be represented by the following:—L. Carlyon, D. Criglington, M. Fidler, R. Grant, D. Kinley, D. Lander, D. McMullan, J. Pel hig, L. Power, G. Rainey, and R. Scott. Farewell Social A farewell social was given by members of the John Knox Presbyterian girls' auxiliary last evening to Miss Jean C. Bell, who has had charge of the auxiliary for the last six months, and who has been the representative of the auxiliary on the church board of managers, and to Miss L. Scott, correspondent secretary of the auxiliary. Both are leaving the district. Miss Bell, who lor the last three years has been attached to the Technical School as cookery instructress, has been appointed to the domestic science staff of the Wellington Technical College, and Miss Scott has joined the staff of the Karitane Hospital, Christchurch. During the evening both were made presentations of crockery ware. The evening was spent in playing games and competitions, songs being sung by Miss J. Hanna and recitations being given by Miss V. Scott. TEMPLETON The fortnightly meeting of the Templeton Oddfellows' Lodge was well attended. Brother F. Simmons was in the chair. Three brothers were reported on the sick list and sick pay and accounts amounting to £lO 13s 4d were passed for payment. It was resolved to hold a working bee in the hall grounds at an early date. At the conclusion of the usual business a friendly game of cards was cor. tucted.
KAIAPOI The annual meeting of the Kaiapoi Golf Club was held at the Cycle Club's rooms, Kaiapoi, last evening. The president, Mr L. B. Evans, presided. The annual report sfiated that the last season had closed with a membership of 117. The accounts for the year showed that the excess of assets over liabilities had been increased by £l4 3s 6d, received from entrance fees, and £lO 0s lid, the amount by which the income exceeded the expenditure during the year. During the last season a grass mower had been purchased and used with excellent effect on the fairways. The committee tendered its thanks to Mr R. J. Smith for superintending the greens and Mr A. Emmett for his work as green-keeper. Many Interesting competitions and inter-club matches had been played during the season. The Mcintosh Shield was won by Rangiora after a close fight. The men's championship had been won by Mr R. J. Smith for the third time in succession. Mrs W. Paton had again won the ladies' championship, and with Mr T. C. Butcher had also been successful in winning the mixed foursome championship, and the Leithhead Cup. The Evans Cup for the knockout competition went to Mr H. J. Templeton, the Stickings Cup to Mrs G. Hammer, the Parnham Cup to Mr R. H. Reid, and the Fapprill Rose Bowl to Mr R. J. Smith. The report was received and adopted. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr L. B. Evans; vice-presidents, Messrs A W. Leithhead. and H. H. Blackwell; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. N. Mackay; club captain, Mr R. D. Evans; committee, Messrs R. J. Smith R H. Reid, and E. J. dent, Mr R. J. Smith; ladies' committee, Mesdames L. B. Evans,-J. Anderson. and Miss G. Martyn. The chairman referred to the resignation of Mr F. L. Parnham, a foundation member of the club, and a past president. The resignation was accepted with regret and it was decided to place on record .in anm-eciation of Mr Parnham'.s past services. It was resolved that in future the green fees be 2s a round instead of Is fid, or any such other amount as the committee should decide. A rule governing the election of lite members of the club was submitted and approved. CHEVIOT A meeting of the Cheviot branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Plunket Rooms recently. Mrs G. R. W. Leaman, A. C. Barnes, A. Elliott, J. T. Read. T. Bowen. C. E. Powis, R. McKnight, and G. Struthers. The nurse's report was read and confirmed. The secretry submitted a statement of finances from the New Year's Eve dance, which showed a profit of £6 17s (id. The secretary was instructed to write to a concert party in Christchurch and endeavour to arrange an entertainment in the district. BELFAST The quarterly meeting of the Sheldon Park Board was held in the pavilion on Monday nijjhl. In the absence of the chairman (Mr A. P. Nicholls), Mr J. Halligan, deputy-chairman, presided. The following other members were present: Messrs A. Brown, A. E. Clarke, E. Harris, J. R. D. Johns, W. Price. E. T. Wilson, and the secretary (Mr W. T. Rogers). Before the meeting an inspection of the park was held and it was found that a number of trees planted last season would have to bo replaced. It was decided to leave the matter until next meeting. A letter was received from the Belfast Sports Club asking for the eo-onera-tion of the board in providing " the park with a more adequate supply of water for drinking purposes. Messrs Halligan. Clarke, and Price were appointed a sub-committee to confer with members of the sports club. The caretaker reported that stock were straying in the park and after discus-
sion it was decided to communicate with tho owner of the adjoining property and to have the fence repaired, the property owner to bear half the cost. It was decided to have the pavilion painted. OURUHIA At a meeting of the Spencer Park Domain Board the following members were present:—Messrs W. P. Spencer (chairman). McMillan, McFadden, Stubberfleld, Heyder, Wells, and Harvey.
The Auditor-General wrote returning the board's balance-sheet and statement of accounts for the year ending March 31, 1934, certified as correct. Permission was given the Lands Department to include the domain area with the balance of Reserve 1617, for which an application to trap rabbits had been received by them. The secretary was instructed to procure seed for sowing on the sports area and Mr McFadden's offer to sow seed was accepted with thanks. The chairman reported that, in company with the secretary, he had waited on the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes) with further reference to the board's proposal to lease sections fronting on the Heyder's road for week-end dwellings. Mr Forbes promised to go into the matter with the Lands Department on his return to Wellington. Accounts totalling £l2 6s 8d w6re passed for payment and the secretary reported that after payment of these accounts, there would still be a credit
balance in the bank account. Mr B. R. Dunlop, of Ouruhia, attended by invitation and paid over the proceeds from the sale of a pig which he had given to. the board's funds, the purchaser being Mr A. Fleming. A hearty vote of thanks to Mr Dunlop for his generosity was carried by acclamation. PREHBLETON Mrs G. G. Sutherland has returned
from a visit to, the West Coast. Miss Edna Ayers (Lyttelton) is the guest of Mrs W. O. Downey. Miss Nancy Smith (Kaikoura) is visiting her aunt, Mrs A. Smith. Mr C. Pepper, who has been staying with Mrs W. Kolkman, has returned to Christchurch. Deaconess Park will address members of the Mothers' Union at their monthly meeting to be held this week. LITTLE RIVER A friendly cricket match was played at the Awa-iti Domain, Little River, over the week-end, between Spreydon and Maoris. Spreydon made 80 for eight wickets, and Maoris made 106. The cricket match between Little River and Maoris, which was postponed from Saturday week, was played on Saturday at Little River. Little River secured a three-point win. Little River, in the first innings, made 148, and in the second innings, 10 for no wickets. Maoris, in the first innings, made 78. and in the second innings 75.
Miss Olive Southgate. who is relieving school teacher at Okuti Valley, Little River, will leave to-morrow to take up her duties at Addington, Christchurch. Miss Davis, Lower Hutt, will arrive to-morrow to take up her duties as school teacher at Okuti Valley, Little River. Miss Nelly Fahey, Sumner, who has been an inmate of the Lewishaw Hospital for the last month, is now visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs P. Fahey, "Chiskan," Little River.
