j MR GEORGE SIMPSON i K»>.; ASSOCIATION TILMmV.) DUNEDIN, March 11. The death occurred on Saturday, at the age of 83, of Mr George Simpson, well known in the building trade throughout the Dominion. He was a supporter of technical education, and for a time held a seat on the King Edward College Board of Managers. He was also closely identified in official capacities with the Master Builders' Association and the Sanitary Institute. Mr Simpson is survived by a widow and four sons. MR J. M. Mr Powell was born at Newport, Monmouthsnire, England, and went to Adelaide at the age of IC. Later he was a goldmincr in Victoria and Queensland, and went to Otago in 1865. In the same year he moved to the Coast. In his younger days Mr Powell took i an active interest in public affairs, and was a member of the first county council. All the other members of that council died before him. The only other person alive, w r ho was at the rush in 1866 is Mrs.Nevin, who was then a girl. For many years Mr Powell was a member of the Charleston School Committee, part of the time as secretary. He was a member of the Oddfellows' Lodge for 57 years, for i some years of which he was secretary, | and was a Justice of the Peace from I 1890. j Mr Powell is survived by two sons, Mr E. M. Powell (secretary of the Buller Hospital Board), and Mr J. H. Powell, a member of the Buller County Council, and one daughter, Mrs Jno. Mowatt (Wellington*. MRS SILAS HOKE Mrs Silas Hore, w-hose death at Te Awarnutu occurred last week, had many friends in Christchurch, where she lived in Rutland street, St. Albans, until four years ago. Her husband, who predeceased her, was one of the earliest seekers for gold on the Otago goldfields, and he spent most of his life in Otago.
