When Mr William Long, formerly a squadron sergeant-major in a cavalry regiment, retired from the British Army nearly 20 years ago, he immediately applied for appointment as a potential recruiter for the regular army. He recently received an acknowledgment of his letter, and an intimation that he has been appointed recruiter for the area in which lie lives. It is an easier matter to attend to the outside of a great dome like that of St. Paul's Cathedral in London than to attend to the inside, and that may account for the fact that it is 220 years since the inside was given a spring cleaning. Recently, men, working on i scaffolding 170 ft above the marble i Hoor of the Cathedral, were scrubbing the accumulated grime of centuries from the marble pilasters and gilt capitals. Owing to the curvature of the dome the scaffolding leaned inward some feet, and although the men doing the work were regularly engaged in Cathedral repairs they found it difficult to get accustomed to the peculiar conditions. They seemed to be hanging backwards while they worked. It will take eight men at least eight months to finish it.
