TRENTHAM NOTES.

YESTERDAY'S GALLOPS. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. (PBZS3 ASSOCIATION TILXOBAM.) WELLINGTON, March 15. Not many of the visiting horses to race at the Wellington Meeting have yet arrived, and galloping at Trentham this morning was coniined principally to horses trained at that centre. The weather was overcast but fine, and the plough, which was exclusively used, was in excellent order. J. W. Lowe's team, Red Sun, Normandy and Moab Queen, also C. Pritchard's pair, Autopay and Weatherstep, aid strong puce work only. Red Sun and Normandy galloped well over seven furlongs in lmin 4-osec yesterday, and both are very lit. Autopay is to contest the Railway Handicap in preference to the Thompson.

Gay Song finished too strongly lor White Squall at the end of five furlongs, beating her by a good length in lmin ssec, the last half being ruii in 50 4-ssec.

Cape Town and Miss Hastings were together throughout an easy seven furlongs, run in lmin 37 2-ssec. Woratah completely turned the tables on St. Roger in beating him by three lengths over live furlongs in lmin 3sec, the last half-mile being run in •SOsec. The latter, however, can do better than this. Royal Game easily accounted tor Earthquake over seven furlongs in .lmin 33 l-ssec, the last half being done in 51 2-osec. The latter closed up quickly in the straight, but this might have been the result of Miss Beatrice chipping in at the three-fur-long post, and racing ahead of tho pair to the winning post. Might was again several lengtJis too good for Clangor over fivo furlongs in lmin ssec, tho last half being rmj. in 52, sec. . Late Jest was nell behind Cockpen half-way down tho straight in their half-mile, but was almost on terms before reaching tho post in 49 3-ssoc, a good gallop. Marjoram, who is to resume racing on the second day of tho meeting, beat Gold Sand by a length over fivo furlongs in lmin 3 2-ssec, the last hair taking 50 2^sseoFlower slipped over tho last six ot seven furlongs in lmin 18 3-ssec, the last half being done in 52 3-ssec. Foghorn finished very strongly to beat Joie de Val by a neck at the end of a, mile, run in lmin 47 3-ssec, the last half being don© in 53sec. ihey were not doing their best till near the close; Foghorn, had the advantage in weights. Eminent ran the last half-mile of nvo furlongs easily in 52sec. Araios was stopping quickly, thougn still a neck in front of Colossical at the end of half a milo in 50 l-ssec. Lyrical surprised by reeling off seven furlongs in lmin 31sec, doing it nicely all the way. A. E. Noale had I'airway and All Humbug out doing steady work. The former did the last half-mile in 54sec, and the latter the final three furlongs ■in 40sec. All Humbug, who is in the Thompson Handicap, looks a very nt horse. , ... , Lady Quex finished her work with a sharp sprint down the straight. &no is as well as it has been possible to make her. R. Alexander's three horses, Chrysology, Courtyard and Monarchy (who does not come in till the second day) did strong pace work. Monarchy bears a perfectly trained appearance, and the other pair are also in fine or s* er ' Tobaccoland was under a strong hold, in registering lmin 18 3-ssec for six furlongs, the last half-mile being done in 63 l-ssec. A lot of Work has evidently been put into him while ho has been at ithe beach. Additional Tiding engagements are—K. Yoitre. Red Sun. Normandy, and Might: W. J. McDowell, Awaken, Cape Town, and Gay Song; A. Jenkins, Flower.; T. Green, Lady Quex; W. Horno. Miss Hastings; W. J. ton, Weatherstep, All Humbug, /Late Jest, and Lyrical; S. Wilson, Fairway and Clangor. . , , x „ Karapoti was withdrawn at 5.35 p.mvesterday from all engagements at the Wellington meeting Chief Jewel, was taken out of the St. Leger.

AGTJA CALIENTE HANDICAP. PHAR LAP'S PROSPECTS. NO LONGER THE FAVOURITE. (tJHITED PBESB ASSOCIATION —Bt ELZCTBIC TELEGRAPH—COPYBIGHT.) (Received March 15th, 9.30 p.iA.) AGUA CALIENTE, March 15. Phar Lap is regarded as the question mark for the forthcoming handicap, although he is no longer the favourite. It is recalled that previous favourites have been beaten, and the horse s record normally makes him a favourite. However, the shortness of Phar s training time in America, and the recent injury to a hoof, also the lact that he will for 'the first time race on a left hand turn track, have somewhat detracted from his pre-race prestige. Woodcock, the trainer, continues to be reticent, and refuses to reveal tne horse's best speed for a mile and quarter. He said, however: If/ 'ar Lap is in his best form he will run the lees off the others. Mr D. J. Davis (part-owner) commented : Barring anything Phar Lap will go to the post and give a good account of himself m the han dU Due to the change in hemispheres, Phar Lap is now .putting on ™tead ot tal-ine off his winter coat. Probably it v> ill be necessary to have it clipped.
