THIEF IN CATHEDRAL.
COLLECTION BOX ROBBED. (PRESS 18S0CIATX0X TXLIGBAM ) AUCKLAND, March 14. Detained in the vestry of St. Mary's Cathedral, Parnell, yesterday, by Canon Faucourt and later handed over to the police, Clarence Albert Butterfield, aged 29, a cabinetmaker, was charged with stealing £1 Is Gd from a collection box "at the cathedral. The verger, \V. ■ Hickmatt, believed that the mission and poor boxes placed in the cathedral were being tampered with, .so he returned to the cathedral about 1 p.m. yesterday. Five minutes after he arrived he saw a young man enter by the southern door and tamper with one of the collection boxes.- He accosted Butterfield and then called on Canon Fancourt, who was nearby. The latter detained Butterfield in the vestry until the police arrived. The mission box was later found open, part of the latch having been removed. It was empty. When Butterfield appeared in the Magistrate's Court to-day he pleaded guilty. "This man has also stolen from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and it is that he also stole Canon Ffincouv't's attache case," said Detec-tive-Sergeant Kelly in obtaining a remand until March 21st. Butterfield's request for bail was refused.
