♦ NEW BRIGHTON. The fortnightly meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr E. A. M. Leaver) presiding. Present: Crs. J. S. AinSworth, A. E. La wry, W. Huluie, It. A'«» Hollowaj', -f. 13. Thomson, and W. Wilkin*. A telegram from the Kt. Hon. J. G. Coatea cancelling all road authorities, but stating that where contracts havo been let or definite commitments made, tho Government will consider issuing fresh authorities, was received. Tho District Engineer, Public Works De pntment, returned the plans and specifications of tha proposed protcctivo works at Pleasant Point reserve, duly approved, but intimated that in view of. Head Office instructions, work was not to be proceeded with. . • • _ , Xn respon-je to a request from the district Engineer, Public Works Department;, Christchnrch, that he be supplied with particulars of the commitments against the pioposed protective works at Pleasant Point itserve, the Town Clerk (Mr C. T. Middleton) reported that this return had already been made The chairman of the Works' Committee (Cr. J. S. AinsworthV and the Town Clerk were authorised to prepare and submit to the Main Highways Board a schedule as to the rats* payable -to local bodies for hire of plant used on the main highways. It was decided to consider a request from the South Brighton Progress League that provision be made on the estimates in the coming year for a turn-table at the east end of Beatty street. At the leqiiest of. tli9 North Beach and Waimairi Progress League, it was decided that the attertion of the Borough Inspector l:e drawn to the complaint, as to stray dogs wandering in North Beach. It was resolved that a sub-comm:ttee consisting of tho Mayor and Crs. 1 ./awry and Thomson confer with the New Brighton Sun CIuU with reference to their application for a lease of the area at present soccupied by ■ the club, together with a further area for sun-bathing; also as to the provision of conveniences to tha north of the pavilion towards the cost qf which the club was prepared to. contribute £lO. The Town Clerk reported that the Christclu.rch Drainage Board maintained tho wali on either side of the New Brighton bridge and would give attention to the subsidence on the Avon stream side of the bridge. The Mayor was recommended as the Council's appointee to the Canterbury Progress Lengue. * It was decided to inform the South Brighton Progress League that temporary renairs would lie effected to the stone wall at Eleasant Point, and that the question of a water supply to thi Jellicoe street reserve would have consideration when framing the estimates. In reply to an enquiry from the Christchurch Drainage Board as to the terms on which the Brigade would be prepared to undertake the protection from fire of the loard's plantations and dwellings in the Bromley riding, on the motion of the Mayor it was decided to inform the Drainage Board tl.at whilst t-h.'i Brigade was only too released t<v assist rt. the recent fires at the Board's, property. .the Oonncil .cculd .not see its way to into art to undertake *upnression of fires outside the borough n^unaavv.
