EMPIRE DAY.
A WOMEN'S MOVEMENT. APPEAL TO HOUSEHOLDERS. \ irKOM OTJB OWS COEKB3POHDBNT.) LONDON, February 2. A Women's Committee ■ has been formed by the Fellowship of the British Empire Exhibition, under the chairmanship of Mrs L. C. Amery, to make ah appeal to the women of all parts of the Empire that on Empire Day, 1932 (and on future Empire Days) they should agree to use at their tables solely the food products of Home and Empire Jands. They will be asked to give first preference to the products of their own farms and gardens and factories, i.e., in Great Britain the products of the United Kingdom,' and in each Dominion ' and Colony overseas home products first; then the products of other parts of the Empire. Two objectives are aimed at in this appeal: (1) The encouragement which will be gained, in a time of stress and difficulty, from a remembrance of the gracious dispensation of providence, which enables the British Empire to, produce every article of food needed for human comfort; (2) the aid to the food producers of the Empire to.make known the resources of their land. Tho committee for Great Britain iw* ! eludes ladies having special links with various'great Empire organisations and with almost every part of the Empire overseas. Lady Wilford represents New Zealand and Lady Jellicoe and Miss Studholme are members of the committee for Great Britain. _ . The sympathy of the Empire Marketing Board, of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, of the Chambers of Commerce, and of the Empire -Produc*: ers' Association is ensured. Help is sought of all private householders and the managers of all clubs, hotels, and restaurants, asking them; (1) to promise ,to make the meals of that day Empire meals; (2) in the case of clubs, hotels, and restaurants, to allow the fact of their promise to be published in the Press. In addition, those who wore willing and able to do so,, might be asked to help further by: (a) giving an "Empire" lunch or dinner that day, serving only Empire food; CM in tho case of such restaurants and stores as make special displays of food reserving such displays for 1 products.
How People Can Heilp.; . It is suggested that ministers of religion could help by asking congregations to join on Empire Day in acknowledgment to the Almighty for the great rt, sources with which the British Empire ST. <S«« Eevelation, Chapter 22, Verse 2.) Civic heads of a city, town, or mum cipal district could ask. fellow citizens to observe Empire Day in this jay. Governing bodies of any Empire o ganisation or other patriotic could invite its members to observe Empire day in this way. _ Heads of a University, college, or school could call the attention of the students to the food resources of the E privatb ; citizens are asked that their households' Empire Day meals should be Of Empire food products only; neighbours should bo asked to come to the same decision; and tradespeople should be urged to stock Empire food product*. Mrs Amery, on behalf of the Committee, has addressed letters inviting p in the formation of Committees m.the
Dominions, colonies, and dependencies. It is hoped that committees will b« set up all over the Empire to ®ct with existing Empire organisations. Meanwhile, the British Committee (address, 3, Temple Gardens, London, E.C., 4) will welcome assurances (by postcard) from householders that they Trill make "Empire meals" part of their observance of Empire Day. - . ' ■ . . The Fellowship of the British Empire Exhibition was constituted' in 1923 (with- H.B.H. the Prince oaf Wales as president) to help the, Wembley Exhibition, and at the close of the Exhi>! bition decided to remain io fljistence for a miniinnm period of seven years to administer it# Scholarship Fund and to help Empire trade interests. Its Scholarship Fund has sent over 300 young people overseas for training as farmers in Dominion Agricultural Colleges or for training as school-teachers.:
