ASHBURTON. SCHOOLBOY INJURED. Gerald Kushton, a schoolboy, aged 11 years, a son of Mr and Mrs A. J. Bushton, Anama, lacerated the thumb of his left hand when it was caught in a wringer, which was on exhibition at the Mayfield Show on Saturday. He was taken to Ashburton for medical attention. Notifiable Diseases. One case of diphtheria was notified to the Borough Health Inspector (Mr J. E. Kichardson) during last week. Mining Rights. During the past three months between 30 and 40 miners' rights have been issued by the Ashburton Mining Registrar (Mr A. J. Ching), seven having been taken out last week. The majority of the applicants were from Christchurch, and a number have gone prospecting on the West Coast. Harvest Thanksgiving. Special harvest thanksgiving • services were held in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church yesterday. The Rev. A. G. Irvine occupied the pulpit. The church was decorated with a good display of farm produce, the proceeds of which, when sold, will be forwarded to the Christchurch Presbyterian orphanage. Harvest thanksgiving services were also held at the Salvation Army citadel yesterday. The interior of the building was decorated and there was the usual display of farm produce, including a large amount of grain. The services were conducted by Adjutant G. H. Pratt, of Christchurch, who was formerly in charge of the Ashburton Corps. The festival witl be concluded to-morrow evening, when a concert, arranged by the Ashburton Silver Band, will be presented, and the produce and grain will be auctioned by Mr J. T. Thomas. Ashburton Fanciers' Society. A meeting of the general committee of the Ashburton Fanciers' Society was held on Friday evening, Mr W. H. Robinson presiding. Messrs G. Bundy and A. J. Nicoll were deputed to arrange a judge for the dogs. The arranging of a judge for rabbits and cats was held over. It was agreed to make a reduction in cookery and needlework entry fees. Women's Golf. At the annual meeting of the Ashburton Ladies' Golf Club, held on Friday afternoon, the following officers were elected: —Captain, Mrs J. Smith; secretary, Miss E. Millichamp; handicap manager, Mrs It. Kennedy; committee, Mesdames J. Grigg, F. W. Watt, L. J. Watt, E. B. Condell and Miss Z. Bonnington. It was decided to open the season on March 31st. Lawn Tennis. The Mid-Canterbury Lawn Tennis SubAssociation's junior competition was continned on Saturday afternoon. Details of the matches are as follows: ALLENTON v. ASHBURTON. ASHBURTON B v. FAIRFIELD. Fairfield received their first defeat of the season on the Oval at the hands of Ashburton B, the home team winning by 84 runs on the first innings. Last week Ashburton B made 254 in their first innings and when play closed Fairfield had put on 14 for the loss of one wicket. Continuing on Saturday, Fairfield brought their total up to 170. Continuing their match with Technical, High School brought their first innings score up to 344, having lost seven wickets for 260 last week. The best batsmen on Saturday were R. Tulloch 40 not out and B. Knox 40. The best bowler for Technical was E. Kerr, who took four for 62. In their second innings Technical raised 101 for seven, leaving High School the winners by an innings and 123 runs. The chief Bcorers in Technical's second strike were: D. Porter 38 and F. Harper 18 not out. THIRD GRADE. Technical secured a three-point win over Rakaia by 113 runs on Saturday. Technical batted first and made 101 (D; McKay 13, Gowans 19, W. Ferris 22, J. Connell 10). E. Evison was the best bowler for Rakaia, taking three for six. Rakaia were dismissed for 31, D. Brown (6) being the top BCorer. Bowling for Technical, H. Baird took seven wickets for 5 runs, and A. Moodie two for five. Technical went to the crease again and declared with two wickets down for 113 runs (H. Baird 53, W. Sparrow not out 27, W. Ferris not out 24). In their second innings Rakaia made 80 (K. Doig 16, D. Brown 26). Bowling for Technical, Gowans took four wickets for 22 runs, W. Moodie one for two, and D. McKay two for one.
