COUNTY COUNCILS

MALVERN

At the meeting of the Malvern County Council held last week Cr. G. F. Wright prosidod. Others present were: Crs. Gillanders, Deans, Chamberlain, Adams, Oullen, and Morrison. The matter o£ a revaluation of the county was again discussed. It was reported that after a representative meeting of ratepayers held at Darueld recently an urgent letter had been sent to the Valuer-General asking for a uniform reduction of 25 per sent, throughout the county, aud comparing the values of land in Malvern with land of a similar nature in other places. The 'ValuerGeneral replied that statistics in regard to population, occupied holdings, stock and grain production, showed conclusively that Malvern had a much' greater proportion of tha better class of land than a neighbouring county. Ho concluded by stating that his Department did not consider that an all-round reduction in valueswould be satisfactory. It was decided to send a further .fatter asking the Valuer-General to quote eats prices above Government valuos at least within the last two years. Copies q£ the correspondence were sent to the Prime Minister, and Messrs Kyle and Hawke, M.P.'s. The engineer reported that as a result of the heavy rainfall in the hills recently a flood had occurred in the Kowai rivor, which necessitated the shutting off of the Kowai races for two days. No damage was dona to the headworks. The Hawkins river was not appreciably affected by the rainfall, but a good supply of water has been made available through the auxiliary race, which had bom considerably improved under the No. 5 S-jhome. Crashing operations ceased at the end of last month, and business in that direction would Tcmain stationary until the end of the current financial year. A tip-truck had been bought for patching purposes, and the two-horso teams would now be available for carting crushed metal from the crusher. The financial report showed that an improvement had been made in the pjymeut of rales during February.
