A RECORD BROKEN. ELMWOOD CLUB'S CARNIVAL. The Canterbury record time for the 220 yds i intermediate girls' championship was broken | by Miss Shona Campbell at the Elmwood Swimming Club's carnival oh fe'aturday. Miss Campbell, covering the distance in 3min 10 2-5 see, clipped 5 2-ssec oft tho provincial re- ■ cord, set by Miss A. Mather in 1925. Splendid time was also registered in the jOyds Canterbury championship by U. 11. bjmes, who won the title in 26 l-ssec by a yard from J. 0. Hattorsley. Symes bettered his own New Zealand record for the distance by 2-ssec. K. McOonvllle holds the Canterbury record for the distance—--25 4-ssec. Tho third championship event on the big programme, the 220 yds boys' intermediate, was won by C. Cliff (East Christchurch) in 2min 52sec, after a slojv race. The 440 yds ladies' championship was easily won by Miss S. Campbell in the fast time of 7roin 9 2-ssec. The intermediate boys' diving championship was won by A. Westaway. Most of the swimming events, particularly the heats in inter-club handicaps, afforded good finishes, but in the diving events the standard was not high. A good crowd attended the carnival. Prominent among the handicap events w_as the 25yds inter-club race, in which there were eleven heats. Elmwood swimmers won all but two of the heat*. The annual swimming sports of the Amberley House Collegiate Girls' School were held on Saturday. The weather was fine, and there was a good attendance of parents and friends. The races were keenly contested, and some good displays of swimming and diving were seen. At the conclusion the prizes were presented by Mrs P. J. Overton, who congratulated the school on its display. The guests then adjourned for afternoon tea, at the invitation of the Principal (Miss N. Enderby).
