THE DARTMOOR MUTINY.
0 OFFICERS WOUNDED. TWO CONVICTS CHARGED. (UKITED PRESS ASSOCIATION— BY ELICTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) LONDON, March 11. '- Thomas Davis and David BrowD, convicts at Dartmoor, were charged respectively at Tavistock with wounding an officer, Ernest Birch, and with attempting to wound an officer, Arthur Udy. ~ . It was stated in evidence that Davis, when exercising on January 22nd, jumped on Birch, whose back _ was turned, and slashed Ms cheeks with a razor blade attached to a stick. Birch, assisted by other officers, overpowered Davis. Birch could not say how many convicts had been flogged through his reports. His losing count was not due to their number. The medical evidence showed that Davis's rib was found to be broken after the mutiny. Brown, also holding a razor blade, slashed at Udy with the blade attached to a stick when Udy entered his cell after having been defied to take Brown out on January 24th. Two other officers helped the warder to overpower Brown, who. was struck on the head with a baton and taken to hospital insensible. Both the accused were committed for trial.
The mutiny occurred on January 24th.
