He was given a farewell social on Tuesdav evening at a gathering of friends, when Mr S. S. Pluck, on their behalf, presented the guest with a suit case, and wished him all success in the future. Mr Thompson replied. ' Mr R. T. Bailey, officer in charge ol the Labour Department, met a lew farmers on Wednesday afternoon, and explained the No. 4A Scheme. Several farmers agreed to take men on the basis of providing food and shelter. Owing to a misunderstanding, Mr Bailey's visit was not known to the farming community, otherwise there would have been a larger attendance. ■ At the monthly meeting of directors of tho Kaikonra Co-operative Dairy Company on Wednesday, it was decided to pay out tenpence for the month of Februarv. ROTHERHAM. A ''bring and buy" sale, in aid ol the local Presbyterian Churcli Funds, ivas held recently at "Cranford," the home of Mrs H. Damp'ier-Crossley. 'Croquet and tennis were played. A putting competition was won by •M rs . Bachelor, and Mr McFarlane, and the tennis competition by Mr Mciarlane and Miss Boag. The stalls were "i charge of Mrs Polhill, Sister McLachlan, and Nurse Mocdy. Mrs Sniale was in charge of the afternoon tea. The afternoon resulted in a pront ° f The J Piotherham Tennis Club held a leap year dance recently in tho Rotherliam Hall. The Hanmer orchestra supplied the music. Tho Women's Committee were M.C.'s. There were several novelty dancers. The Monte Carlo wou bv Miss M Itinnldi. and Mr HGallagher, and.the lucky spot by Mi R. Bennett and partner. CHEVIOT. The (ortnightlv meeting of the Loyal Oicviot Lodge, N* 9004, Ashley District, 1.0.0.F.M.U., was held in the Coronation Library, isl ° N.G., Bro. W. R. Musson. presiding over a good attendance of members. One new membcr vras initiated into tlie Order, ino conductors being Bro. G. Ridout, P.G., and Bro. G. A. Nell. A new social committed was formed, consisting .or tho Lodge officers and Bros. G. A. Nell, L. M. Burnett, W. J. Carson, and E. N. Clarke. WAIPARA. The annual meeting of the OnnlnWaipara Dog Trials .Association was presided over by Mr W. Stackhouse. Mr W. Baxter -was elected president for the incoming' year, and the old committee was re-elected, with the addition or Messrs H. Hardy, J. Hilligan, and P. and B. Inkstone. Mr W. K. McAlpine offered the use o his grounds for the trials. Mr J. Milligan offered a guinea special prize, which was accepted. All present agreed to give their special prizes as usual. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £6l 19s Id. OXFORD. On Sunday harvest festival services in connexion with the Oxford Baptist Church were held, when the Rev. E. ,W. Grifcg preached to good congregations in the morning and eyeniDg. The church was decorated with flowers, ■fruit, and grain, and special music was sung by the choir. On Thursday afternoon a garden party was held in the Vicarage grounds of St. Andrew's Church. Among the visitors was the Rev. Canon Wollstciir, who was the first headmaster of the East Oxford' ischool, having been appointed to that office in 1872. ' The Oxford Branch of tho Farmers Union met in the Agricultural and Pastoral Association Hall on Thursday night, when Mr H. G. Parish presided. 'Objection was taken to the decision of the Department of Justice to close the Oxford Magistrate's Court. Correspondence was read on this matter, stating that the decision to close was on the ground of economy. It was pointed out that the total annual cost of the local Court was £3O, which could be considerably reduced without impairing efficiency, while the revenue from Court fees was £67. It was decided to use every endeavour to have tho Court retained. WOODEND. At a meeting of the Waikuku Methodist Church Trust, the Rev. H.. Ford presided. The annual report was read by Mr Griffiths, and adopted. Two new trustees were nominated, and the names of two former trustees who have left the district wero deleted. Thanhs were accorded to the latter two ior their services whilst here. ■The large attendance at the annual meeting of the Woodend Social 01" b .augurs well for its 1932 season. The Rev. H. Ford occupied the chair, Mrs J. Little presented .the balance-sheet, and the report on last season's work, which were adopted. The election of officers resulted:—President, the HevH. Ford; vice-presidents, Messrs I• Burnet and H. Gilhnan, 8.A.; secretary and treasurer, Mrs J. Little; assistant secretaries. Misses Gwen Jtferle' Little; conductor. Mr J. Robson; pianist, Mrs D. Shea; deputy pianist, Mrs J. Southen; librarian. Mr T. Gibbs; assistant. Mr R. Southen; general committee. Mesdames J. bcott and G. Little, Messrs W-. Whitlow and J. Dempster; programme committee, the secretary, pianist, and conductor. Several new members were welcomed. For- the present, the club intends to carry on on the same lines as last season, but may launch out- into fresli waters before long. Thanks were accorded to all who helped to make last season such an outstanding success, especially.to the secretary for her work in producing; the dramatic items, as well as for the usual secretarial routine work, likewise to, the conductor and the pianist. ISLINGTON. Mr and Mrs A. Case wore the recipients of a presentation from the employees of the slaughter houso department of the New Zealn.nd Refrigerating Works, Islington. «,Mr J. W. Dow, manager of the works, made the presentation of a handsome clock to Mr Case, and to Mrs Case of a handbag, and wished them all success. Mr Case, on belialf of himself and wife, responded suitably , HORNBY. The Workers' Educational Association held its meeting in the Hornby School on Wednesday evening. Mr F. A. Mc'J'eigue presided. Mr George Manning gave an address on "Economies, and the Law of Diminishing Returns." LEESTON. The committee of the Leeston Athletic Club met on Thursday evening to make arrangements for the sports mooting to be held on Easter Saturday,' Mr J. C. Free presiding. Tlio chairman reported that arrangements were well,in hand lor the dance to bo held on sports night. The monthly meeting of the Leeston Town Board was attended by Commissioners J. C. Free (chairman), F. Howell, A. Lyons, L. C. Vicary, W. A. Johnston, 11. J. McConriell, and W. Johnston. Gnus. Uowell and Free were authorised to purchase a hov.se for the use of the Board's overseer. The clerk reported that the rates outstanding amounted to £272 14s 3d, and that the Board would have cash assets over liabilities of over £240 at the end of the financial year. A discussion took place in regard to the question of effecting economies during the next year, and it was agreed that the chairman should confer with the Board's employees to see what reductions could be made. SOUTH MALVERN. In the Public Hall,. Glentunnel,' on Thursday afternoon. Mrs John Deans presided over a good attendance ol members of the South Malvern Plnnkct Society. There were present Mesdames John Deans, Kellaway, Chapman, C. Stuart. G. D. Marsh. Campbell, F. TeaJe, J. Marsh, D. Dickie, W. --cSkimming. Nurse Finlayson was also in attendance, and after attending to the many babies, delivered an address on ifantile paralysis. Mrs Deans reminded the members that the halfyearly jumble sale would be held i* l Christchurcli on April 6th. The annual, meeting of the branch was arranged for April 14th. Mr F. Milne is visiting relatives 11 Glentunnel. Mr A. J. Price (Dallington) is the guest of Mr and Mrs G. D. Marsh (Glentunnel). Mrs Naismith is the guest of her daughter, Mrs S. Smith (Coalgate)., HORORATA. In the annual competition for the Women's Laindon 4 Cup (which was presented to the Hororata Tennis Club by Mr H. Richards), a series of rounds has been conducted. On Thursday afternoon round was played by Miss M • McKenzie (the "winner last year), an» Miss D. Oliver Miss Oliver was the winner. In the final round for the junior tennis cup, Miss I. Hore was defeated by Wesley Butt. Mr F. S. Barrett visited the Rakaia river for a few hours on Thursday and secured eleven quihnat salmon; .Mr J. Trembath Ross has been visiting Mr and Mrs T. Keltie. • Mr and Mrs Clemens (Newlands) nave been staying with Mrs Keltie. Misses H. and W. Napier (Waimate) ard spending a holiday with Mrs Butt. Mrs G. C. Derrett is spending a' holiday m Wellington.
