C. Abernethy as Speaker of the House. The Governor-General's speech was dehjerai b y Dr . John Guth £ e m the tiaditional manner, and the representative of the Crown outlined at length _ the problems of the day. He coiered most of the ground which was covered by the official speech at the opening of the New Zealand Parliament, emphasising the need for sacrifice- Dr. Guthrie said that in the reauction of costs it would certainly be necessary to reduce wages and overtime rates; also interest on mortgages, Dank interest and probably interest bn *®J[® rni nent al \d local body botids.
