BOWLING.
MADDISON TROPHY. PRELIMINARY ROUNDS COMPLETED. The first three rounds of the Maddison trophy competition were played oft on thfe Christchurch green yesterday afternoon. Weather conditions were excelUnt, the slight shower prior to the commencement of the second round hating little effect on the J-reen, which, however, *was not- playing as fast ns usual. A fairly large gallery had assembled by noon to watch the opening games, and later in the afternoon thi onlookers numbered abo,ut two hundred. The standard of play was os high as is usually aeen wh«n the club champions meet for the Centre title, and some particularly fln4 heads were built up. Last season's winner, J. S. Martin (Sumner) showed in tha first round thst he has retained his form of last year by decisively defeating W. Wsrdell. He had an equally easy victory over W. Efford, but in the third round Martin was completely overshadowed by A. Dickson. The Christchurch player was a model of consistency, and i thoroughly merited his win. Martin, was narrow on almost every head, and his occasional drives lackfed their usual deadly precision. The LyHelton player, W. H. Dunlop, gav* impressive performances, and H. Wilson (Linwood) and J. T. Bisman (New Brighton) will make ft bold bid when the semi-finals come up for decision. Results were as follows: First Bound. , W. Efford (Edgeware) 21, J\ Thomson (Elmwood) . 18. J. S. The concluding rounds of the annual tournament for teams competing in the Christchurch Bowling Centre's mid-week competition were decided yesterday on the Beckenham green. The green was in good order, though rather slow. The games wore very closely contested, and some fine -heads were witnessed. In the Beauland v. Haigh game, the latter was two up on the board and two up on the head when Jones, the Edgeware No. 3, took the mat in the final head. He sent down a fast drive and lay two. Beanland adding a third to win Ihe game by a single. The final between BeAnland and McKenzii was not very exciting, the Opawa tefini having the upper hand throughout. Results were as follows: — First Round. Beaolaqd (Edgeware) 12, Haigh (Opawal 11. McKensie (Opawa) 15, Goldstone (Opawa: 13. Uni£ed a bye. Second Round. McKenzie (Opnwn) 1-.
