The balance-sheet was received duly certified to by the Auditor-General. it was resolved to take no action in the matter of the Waitemata County Council's law case with the Waitemata Electric Power Board in regard to the cost of renewing poles where a highway was widened. Defaulting ratepayers for last year were given until March 24th before collection was handed over to the Council's solicitor. It was decided to impose the 10 per cent, penalty on all this year's rates not paid by March 26th, and on all last year's rates that were handed to the solicitor for collection. It was decided to postpone the poll for the West Eyreton bridge loan until a return of prosperity to ratepayers in that district. Where unemployed men were occupied in cleaning drains or other work "over the fence" it was decided to charge the owner Is per day per man to cover the cost of insurance and use of tools. The clerk reported that the overdraft was £IXSO, but that when rates to the extent of £I6OO came in, together with rents and the amount due from the Main Highways Board, etc., the year should close with a credit balance of some £350.
