RUGBY. 3-2-3 SCRUM. FORMATION discussed. DECISION OF OLD BOYS' CLUB. That the club instruct its delegates ie tspport tho introduction of tlio • ltrm formation whicli provides for y iree men in the front rank, and that formation be given a trial in Canterbury throughout this season was tho jflftMon' of the annual meeting of the gja gthool Old Boys' Rugby Football held last night, fie discussion occurred when the notice of motion to the Canterbury Rugby Union, that tlie 3-2-3 scrum formation ie tried for the Jlrst twe matches of season, was before the meeting. Referee's Opinion. J£r S. Hollander, the well-known n--fcjee who acted in that capacity in the f W t' matches with the 'English tjjm, taid that he did not think git the wording of the notice motion conveyed the meanjgg that was intended by it, as if it - vis passed in present form it would fe definitely the scrum formation as J.J-3. It would therefore preclude the flaring of other formations such as the J-4-1 <jr the 3-3-2. He said that he n$ certainly in favour of having three gen in the front row, but did not favour getting dawn just how the remainder rf the scrum was to be distributed or ■iwtd' Mr VT. C. Dallev, an ex-All Black half-back, and Mr T. Milliken, a member of the Canterbury Rugby Union, each maintained that the intention of the motion must be merely to ensure that there be three men only in the frost row. "Not a Destructive Force. *' Mr Milliken added that it had been saistained that the notice of motion wis going too far when it referred lo tike wing-forward as a "destructive fotee." Everyone knew that there all types of wing-forwards, but Mt all. of them could be accused of spoiling the - game. However, the intasded discussion of the change of foraatfon was bound up with the fact that the authorities at Home had passed aasendflients to laws, particularly that «Uch compelled tho allowing of tho hall to pass three feet in the scrum before it could be hooked. That had ■eant that the 3-2-3 formation, if played,, allowed the outside man to hook with hia outside foot only. If a New Zealand team went to Australia this year playi*g the 2-3-2 formation that particuhr role -would mean that it would be impossible to hook the ball and comply, with the regulation. It meant either conforming to the rules laid down by Jhe English Bugby Union and losing the hall or changing the formation of the actum to have three men in the front row. It had seemed to tho Canterbury Bsgtyr. Union that the formation of the J-S4 lenaa should be given a trial so tW> (Wih would be in a position were many differing iastance » A - I. He moved: "That the Council be asked to frame a set of by-laws, in order to prevent the removal of gear from the park by unauthorised perons." The question of the desirability of trying out the 3-2-3 scrum on the recommendation of the Canterbury Uugby Union was discussed, and the club's delegate was instructed to voto in favour of giving tho new system a trial.
