FISHING AT THE CHATHAMS.
ro TUB EDITOR OT X RB PR ESS Sir,—My attention has been drawn to an article appearing in your paper early last week regarding fishing at Kaingaroa, Chathains. The article states that the reason why fishing has been suspended in that locality for a few months is that the fish there are tapu amongst the Maoris. Certainly the Maoris would not eat any fcsh caught there for some months, owing' to a fatal boating accident which happened in July last. But the reason why fishing and freezing works are closed at Kaingaroa was because there was not enough demand in Australia and New Zealand for Chatham Island blue cod. The fishing and freezing works at Owenga opened early in January, and they hope to have the fishing and freezing works opened soon at Kaingaroa. The-Chatham Island blue cod is a very superior fish, and consequently brings a high price on the market. —Yours, etc., TUKAHAHE. Wellington, March Bth, <1932.
