OAMARU, March 8. The annual match between the Waitaki and Christchurch Boys' High Schools was commenced at Waitaki to-day in ideal weather. The wicket was not so fast as usual, and favoured the batsmen. The visitors hatted first, and though the start was a poor one, three being down for 31 runs, those in the middle of the batting list added useful contributions, and the innings realised 225 runs. Waitaki replied with 192, thanks to a fine stand by the tailenders. Hadlee and Gill opened for Christchurch to the bowling of Kent and Smith. Both appeared confident, and exhibited nice scoring strokes. Gill went leg-before to Kent t<s a ball that came in quickly. Cobden was the incomer, and nine had been added when he lost Hadlee, who was skittled by Kent. Cobden went without any addition to the score, but a useful stand by Walter #nd Cook carried the total to 110, when J. Dick got Walter leg-before. The half-century occupied 35 minutes, and the century 68 minutes. Vincent started brightly, and with Cook carried the score to 3 40, .when Cook snicked a ball from Smith that was going away, and was snapped up brilliantly by Paape. The departing batsman had batted soundly for 46, his best scoring stroke being a drive past third man. who was fielding too close in. Munt appeared to have an. awkward style, but his timing was perfect. At lunch the score was 163 for five wickets. When play was resumed the first couple of overs were expensive, both batsmen finding the boundary. Munt fell a victim to the slow bow;ler, being caught off a full toss. Birch's stay was merry while it lasted, his including four boundaries. Vincent went without any addition to the score, and Smith bagged the remaining 'wickets cheaply, the innings clqsing for 225. pick and Mathias were Waitaki's opening pair. The former was quickly into his stride and monopolised the scoring with wellplaced shots through the covers. •He appeared set when he lost his wicket. Kent was unfortunate, being bowled off his thigh, and two were down for' 62." Eight runs later Menzies and Mathias were caught, and a "rot" set in # three wickets falling quicklv. McArthur and Rendle improved .the outlook by careful play. A fighting innings by Forbes raised the home team's hopes, and although he was fortunate in not being run out a couple of times, hia 47 was a fine e ffort. With one run- added the last wicket fell, leaving the visitors with a lead of 33 on the first innings. Scores:— CHRISTCHURCH. . ' First" Innings.
