MAYOR'S FUND.
RELIEF OF DISTRESS. ARRANGEMENTS FOR STREET COLLECTION. Preparations for the street appeal in aid of the Mayor's Distress Fund, which is to be held in Christchureh on March lStli, were actively advanced at a meeting of a special committee of the All Nations Fair Executive, which was held at the City Council Chambers last night. There were present:—Mr S. \V. Jameson (in the chair), Mrs H. Williams, Miss JO. Bowden, Dr. J. Restell Thomas, Messrs J. Mawaon Stewart, A. E. MePhail, .T. J. Staples, S. Cheetham, \V. W. Watson, A. E. Purse, A. E. Summerfield, J. W. Hillary, J. Moody, and Miss U. E. Niblock (secretary). For the Publicity Committee, Mr A. E. Purse reported that the Tramway Board had sanctioned the free use of the trams for publicity for the appeal. Posters for the trams and for shopwindows were submitted and approved. Broadcast Appeals. Air Jameson reported that appeals by radio would bo made by Mrs Cecil Wood, Mr George Harper, Mrs WestWatson, and Bishop Brodie. Mrs Wood hail already delivered an excellent address. He added that there had been a splendid response to the appeal for collectors. Miss Niblock, the secretary, reported that 11)2 individual collectors had volunteered besides many City firms, which had promised to man street-corners. Members of the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company had promised to assist, the collection in the afternoon. On the following Sunday they mere also giving a special concert. Volunteers were needed to take stands from 1 p.m. to p.m. and from 5 p.m. to G p.m. It/ was decided to number the 200-odd boxes available so that each collector could be informed what amount he had taken. The meeting decided to ask Mr J. S. llavvkcs to take charge of the organisation of cars. On behalf of the Y.W.C.A., Mrs Bowden offered to pin 10,000 of the 60,000 badges. Message From the Governor. Mr Jameson reported that it was intended to ask his Excellency the Governor-General, the Prime Minister, and the Leader of the Opposition to write commending the appeal. Mr Forbes might also speak a few words over the radio from Wellington. The chairman reported the different offers of assistance which had been made by different City firms and organisations. "I think that with the response already achieved and these all still to come in, we should get the numbers we want." said Mr Jameson.
