General entries for the CanterburyJockey Club's Autumn Meeting, acceptances for the Great Autumn and Great Easter Handicaps, and first forfeits for the Champagne and Challenge Stakes, are due at 8 p.m. on Friday. Acceptances for the Wellington Bacing Club's Autumn Meeting close at 9 p.m. to-day. Easter Racing at Riccarton. The adjustments by Mr J. E. Henrys for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps, published yesterday, trill serve to direct attention to ""the Autumn Meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club to be held on March 28th and 29th. Great Easter Handicap. Cimabue heads the list in the Great Easter Handicap with 9-0. He won the race in. 1929 with 8-9, and got on the winning list as recently aa last Christmas, so he cannot be considered to be overburdened. Gay Crest has never won over any distance less than a mile, but in the face of Ms good effort' in the Hazlett Cup at Wingatni, he <has been given a good chance with 8-13. Antopay has disappointed too many times since his trip to Sydney to be seriously considered at this stage, but" Silver Paper would only have to reproduce his Dunedin first day's form to be a source of danger. Chrysology has evidently developed stamida, and will have to be ticked off. Golden Wings and Cricket Bat are two good three-year-olds on the same mark, and the latter especially makes strong appeal. Arrow Lad and Meprisant can both Ibe depended upon over a seven , furlong course. Great' Charter and Charmeuse, winners in 1930 and 1931 respectively, are on the same mark, 7-12, and are receiving lib from Great Star, who ran second to Cimabue with 7-0, and second last year to Charmeuse with 7-10. He, however, has earned his place by his good form in recent months. Charmeuse, who carried 7-1 last year, has not won a race since, while Great Charter has had three successes in the past eouple of months. It' cannot be said therefore that any ride has ibeen taken with Charmeuse. Bed Heckle, who filled third place in the 1930 race, has done nothing for a long time to bring him into discussion, but Gesture is a very likely proposition with 7-11. Several of the remainder are entitled to reference, and the besf of them appear at this juncture to be Korokio, Grecian Prince, Moorbird, Ringing Cheer, The Quorn, and Azalea. Much may happen between now and the date of the event, and the Wellington Meeting should help investors, but in the meantime the public are inclined to favour the prospects of Cricket Bat, Charmeuse, Gesture, and Great Charter. Great Autumn Handicap. Gay Crest has been set a very severe task in the Great Autumn Handicap with 9-13, or Ist 41b above the next in the list, Black Duke, who won last year's event with 7-9. Twelve months ago Night'march was given 10-3, but he was probably more entitled to that poundage than Gay Crest is to 4lb less. Still, the latter is a class above the opposition, and is a good weight carrier, as evidenced by his win over a mile and three furlongs at Trentham in January with 9-5. The highest' weights previously carried to victory were 9-13 by Sasanoff in 19?0, 9-11 by Warstep in 1915, 9-6 by Hynanna in 1928, and 9-5 by Los Angeles in 1912, and 9-4 by Grand Knight in 1926. Should Gay Crest's engagement be continued, he will be in demand in spite of his burden. Black Duke is probably in better order than at this time last year, and 8-9 will not stop him. Spearfal has been only a moderate success since his win In the New Zealand Cup,- but if he comes south, he will have plenty of followers with 8-3. Jaloux, on the same mark, is a distinct possibility, and his progress from now on will be followed with interest. Bed Sea has raced consistently of late under solid weights, while another southerner in Bed Bacer has only to be near his Dunedin Cup form to keep the field busy throughout. Great Star may endeavour to win ■ the double, and with 7-10 cannot be despised. Boyal Love would be considered handily placed if he were at' his best, but such is not likely, and his stable mate, Bamo, will be preferred. He is a born stayer, and will be on hand at the finish with his 7-5. There

are some useful gallopers in the lower half of the list, but none makes appeal just now as likely to master a mile and a half journey. Again Trentham form will be valuable to follow, but candidates at present attracting attention comprise Black Duke, Jaloux, Bed Racer, and Ramo. At Dannevirke To-day. The Dannevirke Bacing Club's Autumn Meeting will open to-day with very moderate fields. The following horses will probably be well supported:— High-weight Handicap: Decree Nisi; Maiden Plate: Headland, Right Bower; Dannevirke Cup: Mahora, Jayson, Shrewd; Tahoraite Hack: Golden Shadow; Rakaiatai Nursery: Copper King; Oringi Hack: Lady Ronald, Flower; President's Handicap: Moa Bird; Makirikiri Haek: Grand Lahu, Baskier. Nea Lap's Recovery. Nea Lap has recovered from the injuries which she received on the trip from Wellington to Sydney, and is quite sound and ready to race at any time. Advice to this effect has been received by the owner, Mr J. J. Gatenby, of Hastings. An Appreciation. The Uniop Steam Ship Company has received the following letter from Mr ,D. J. Davis:— ''l would like to thank you for the good attention given Phar Lap on the voyage from New Zealand in the Mcmowai, arriving San Francisco January 15th. The extra stall fitted up for him aboard the Monowai, with a sand pile, proved all I expected, and the great horse seemed to enjoy his daily roll in the sand, and even took a nap in the afternoon stretched out on the sand. To give you an idea of the services your company rendered Phar Lap, I would just mention that when he arrived in San Francisco he was in better shape than when he left New Zealand, and, as a matter of fact, was ready the day he landed to race." English Sire in America. Like many other countries engaged in breeding racehorses, the United States has drawn very largely on England in replenishing its stock, and many stud successes have been secured. One of the latest to come under the heading is Wrack, a son of Bobert le Diablo, whose progeny won 120 races in America last year, which gave him top place. Wrack was raced in England by the late Lord Eosebery, and after winning a number of good races on the flat, he won fame as a champion hurdler. Robert !e Diable, sire of Wrack, is a son of Ayrshire and grandson of Hanipton, and on the dam's side Wrack traces to Chelandry, the daughter of Goldfinch and Illuminata, a gem of the stud book. With such an array of high-class blood in his veins it comes as no surprise to find Wrack a success as a sire. Unlikely to Stand. Toxeuma was lame when he pulled up after the Autumn Handicap at Napier Park on Saturday. It is doubtful if he -will race again this season, though it is to be hoped the trouble will not mean his permanent retirement. Price of Success. It is interesting to note that in the Great Easter Handicap, of 3930, Gay Crest earned 7-0, and was the outsider of the field of 12. On the next day he won the Great Autumn Handicap with the same impost, being seventh favourite in a field of nine. This year, Gay Crest has 8-13 in the Great Easter and 9-13 in the Great Autumn. Sale at Wingatul. Mr G. J. Barton 'a sale of racing stock tfill take place at Wingatui today, when the. following horse?, with their engagements, will go under the hammer:—Antrim Boy, Byrs, by Some Boy ll.—Flare Gun; Ruling Pen, 3yrs, by Chief Ruler—Penella; Warship, 2yrs, by Pombal—Homage; Mayam, 2yrs, by Tea Tray—Puttee; Gallant Fox, 3yrs, by Hunting Song—Smoke Concert; A 1 Jolson, 4yrs, by Lomond—Motley; Sei grave, 4yrs, by Arausio—Marty; Academy, syrs, by Lelghton—First Class. There are also the b'rood mare, Artistic, by Leighton—Statuette, with colt foal by Paladin; yearling colt by Paper Money—Artistic; and yearling colt" by Hunting Song—Miss Love. Successful Sire. Another horse tracing to St. Simon at the stud in Australia who bids fair to keep up the credit of the great family to which he owes descent is The Night Patrol, by Stedfast, son of Chaucer and grandson of St. Simon. The Night Patrol was imported to Australia from England by the Earl of Stradbroke during his term of Governor-General, and under his colours the English-bred horse won a number of important events. When submitted at auction in Melbourne at the close of his racing career, The Night Patrol was made the medium of very spirited bidding, and Mr George Buckley, of Victoria, secured him for 10,000 guineas. In his first season The Night Patrol sired the Queensland Cup winner, Poy Patrol, and with his son Middle W&tch winning classic honours this season he is now sure of a good place on the winning sires' list. Disappointing. During the present season Baroscope's form has not been as good as expected, and the son of Weathervane is to be added to the list and given a lengthy spell. On one or two occasions, notably when he won the St. Andrew's Handicap at Takapuna in the spring, Baroscope demonstrated his ability to run out a middle distance successfully, and when he resumes racing again he may be an improved horse in every respect. Reminiscences. The veteran trainer, Mr B. Gooseman, has a very interesting clipping from the "Hawke's Bay Herald" of 1871, in the shape 'of the programme of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's race meeting of that year. As a comparison with even the so-called small stakes of the present day, the programme is rather illuminating. For instance, the value of the Hawke's Bay Cup Handicap was 100 sovs, but it cost owners 15 sovs to start their horses. Similarly the hack races of 10 sovs each cost 1 sov to start. A Consistent Hack. Tigerism was in good form at "the Rangitikei Meeting, where he won the Ngatiapa Handicap on the first day and the President's Hack Cup on the final day. In his last four outings Tigerism has notched three wins and one second placing, and is one of the most consistent hacks racing at the present time. He is a three-year-old gelding by Grandcourt from Tigeroy, by Kilboy from Tigris, is owned by his breeders, Messrs McLeod and Slater, who have done well lately with Araunah, and is trained by J. Proctor at Foxton. Good judges predict a prosperous future for Tigerism before his turf career is over. A halfbrother to Tigerism, Gold Ruler, by Chief Ruler, won the Trial Handicap on the second day at Napier. He was sold a few months back by the same breedW$9MiS» ft geatewfl, Hastings,

TROTTING NOTES.

Reminders. Nominations for the New Zealand Metropolitan T.C.'s Easter Meeting close to-morrow at noon. Acceptances for the Manawatu Meeting close on Friday, a,t 6 p.m. Acceptances for the Wyndham T.C.'s Meeting close on Friday, at 5 p.m. Back in Work. Another chance is to be given Kohara to earn further distinction on the race track, and the black stallion was recently taken in hand by J. Bryce. Kohara looks big, bright, and healthy, his work to date having been mostly confined to swimming. He may be given a race at the Addington Easter Meeting. Remained in South. After racing unsuccessfully at the Invercargill Meeting, where the state of the going did not favour her, Manoeuvre was not brought .back to Canterbury, but she has been kept in the South and she will next race at the Wyndham Meeting on March 16th. Corrections. There was a mistake made in the list of the telegraphed handicaps for the Buller Handicap Trot at the Westport J.C.'s Meeting, which appeared in yesterday's PiiEs;j. With the exception of Bonny Wrack, all those horses on 12yds should be on scratch. In the Granity Handicap Trot Major Brent 24yds was omitted. Canterbury Team for Hawera. Canterbury trainers represented at the Hawera Trotting Club's Meeting to be held on March 26th and 28th are as follows: —C. S. Donald, Astral, Special Sun, Sandown, Tini Uria; M. 15. Edwards, Chapter, Historian, Silver de Oro; J. S. Shaw, Mr Penalty, Gay Paree; J. P. McNeill, Princess Thca. Back from a Spell. Rawhitiroa is looking in excellent health at present after having been out for a good spell. He was brought into work some time ago with a view to racing at Easter, but when Mr Morten decided to sell all his horses, Rawhitiroa was again eased up. Good Fields at Timaru. The Timaru Trotting Club was fortunate in drawing big fields for its Summer Meeting held in January, and it was again favoured in receiving good acceptances for its fixture to be held on Saturday, eleven being the smallest field of the day. Goes Well in Saddle. Real Girl showed that she is quite at home in saddle by the exhibition she gave at Addington yesterday morning. Joining in at the mile with Warplane, Jewel Pointer and Brentlight, who had already gone half a mile, she was in front at the finish, having registered 2min Usee for the distance. Ex-Aucklander at Addington. The ex-Auckland-trained mare Benefice is now a regular attendant at Addington, where she has gone through satisfactory work since her arrival at headquarters. Rapid Improvement Made. Gay Paree continues to improve in his work. This trotter has made rapid progress during the past few months, and he should not be long in reaching better company. He is to race at Timaru on Saturday, tout his task from 120 yds will not be an easy one. After racing at Timaru his next appearance is likely to be at Hawera, where he will do his Easter racing. The Railway Department notified that arrangements had b6en made for special trains on the day of the annual races on the same lines as last year. Mr A. J. Hoskins, the secretary, was asked to ascertain if provision had been made for horses to be railed away the day after the Meeting. The secretary reported that owing to race trains this year arriving fifteen minutes later than previously there would be. only 85 minutes allowed between some of the events. Th offer of the Waimate Silver Band to supply a programme of music on race day was accepted, the fee to be £7 7s. The Ground Committee reported that the caretaker bad made a 6plendid job of the training tracks on the portion affected by the flood, and much less top-dreßsing than at first anticipated would now be required. The tracks had benefited from the rain, and "the going was better than had been the case for a number of years. The committee did not at present recommend the spending of any further money on the buildings or appointments. Messrs \V. Sutton (Kurow) and D. O'Connor (Morven) were elected members.
