TAURANGA JUBILEE.
MAORI COMPETITIONS. (press association txleqeam.) TAURANGA, March 8. The Tanranga jubilee celebrations were continued yesterday in fine but windy weather, with ,a Maori day which was an unqualified success, three thousand spectators attending. The hosts, the Ngai-Te-Rangi and Ngati-Tapu tribes of Matapihi. welcomed tho Ngai-Te-Ranginui tribe with a powhiri, which was replied to by a haka. The next arrivals, the Matatuos of Whakatane and the Arawas of Rotorua were both welcomed, and they too replied. Pois and haka competitions were held, four troupes of poi dancers and two haka teams competing. In the poi' competition Ngai-Te-Rangi and NgatoTapu hapes were first and Arawas were second. Judea won the long poi with Waimapu second. Ngai-Te-Rangi won tho haka with Judea second. The ancient game of Matimati was demonstrated, also cooking in hangis, basketwork, and flax weaving. Speeches were given by Mita Taupoj»ki of the Arawas, and Mr B. C. Hobbins, Mayor of Tauranga. Ana Hato and Guide Rangi, of the Arawa tribe, were present. ' In the evening ribbons were presented to the winning poi and haka teams and a silver cup.to the eliampion haka team. The whole demonstration was the finest yet seen here and probably one of the finest yet seen in the Dominion. To-day old identities were entertained to a motor drive round the dis-, trict, aft(jv_ which they were given a civic reception and a tea in the Town Hall.
