LITTLE RIVER EWE FAIR.

VERY KEEN SALE. TOP PRICE FOR SEASON. < The Little River Ewe Fair is always looked upon as one of the most important of the season so far as the estab : lishing of a basis of values for crossbred sheep is concerned and it always attracts a large number of farmers from the Plains who aro in search of that type of sheep which does very well on the heavier land. Yesterday's yarding was one of the smallest for a number of years and the market was slightly better than even the most sanguine could have - expected, with the older sheep especially selling on a very firm strong market. The total penned was 7650 head with two-tooths comprising a small minority. Last year the entry was 10,600 head and in 1930 it was 13,400 head. The attendance was very good and representative ff districts extending a long way out on to the Plains. The > most striking feature was the general lack of condition owing to the severe lengthy period of dry weather experienced in the spring and summer. This, too, may have been some explanation of the absence of so many farmers' drafts which are usually penned annually. There were only one or two pens in the yards which could be said to show any bloom. As compared with the Little River ewe fair last year values showed an advance "of 3s to 5s a head and even on late rates at Addington an increase of at least Is to Is 6d a head was noticeable. The aged > sheep sold at prices very satisfactory to vendors and it must be stated in regard to the adult sheep that although condition was lacking the mouths were very good. , The best price for the sale was 235, which was paid f0r.70 sold on account of Gominander Hall (Peraki). They were a very fine line of two-tooth Romitoy crosses. Top price at last year's sale was 18s 6d, paid for a line of South Otago Romney two-tooths. The best sale of Peninsula sheep last year was 16s ,6d, which was secured for three-quarter-bred two-tooths sold by S. Gilbert (Akaroa). He was not represented yesterday. The best price for three-quarter-breds. yesterday, was 20s 6d, which was paid for sheep sold for L. O. Coop (Kaituha). Crossbreds on account of the same vendor brought 22s—an even-woolled line. There was a straight line of Tolaga .Bay Romneys- sold on account of D. O. Rutherford (Oholta) at 20s. There were 202 in the line. This was the only straight line of Romneys in the market. ' Top price for the older ewes was 17s 6d, which was paid for 183 six and eight-tooth Romney ' cross sold on account of N. R. A. Cox (Chatham Islands). A line of 60 four, six, and eight-tooth crossbreds on account of J. J. McGrath (Little River) brought 16s. In the main the four and five-year sheep were drafted together. The best price was 12s Id, which was paid for 70 four and five-year sheep sold on account of J. Waller (Little River). They were a very attractive line.
