QUARRY TO CLOSE.
TRAMWAY BOARDS DECISION. THREE MEMBERS PROTEST. ' ' The Tramway Board decided yesterday that as the private suppliers' quotations are now a shade less than the Board's own quarry costs, it will preserve the stone on the Board's quarry property and -keep the plant in order, but will accept supplies from 'private souroes for the next six months. Tho' quotation of the Glenmore Brick and Tile Company . was accepted. , ' ■ Mrs E. R. McCombs protested that the plant" had to be maintained in running order and that the Board would get a better typo of metal from its own quarry. Plainly, she said, it was the Board's duty to keep* the men employed. Many* of them had seen many years of service and she would vote against that particular clause of the Work 3 and Traffic Committee's report. - ~ Mr D. Sykes supported Mrs McCombs, stating that he was not satisfied with the Board's system of economy. "If I had my way," he said, "I would start rationing at the top—with the general manager—good as he is. There has been no -reduction in staff and the men who can afford it best have not been asked to make a sacrifice to the same extent as the lower paid men." Mr W. J. "Walter: We, should keep the quarry going. The proposal will save only £25. The chairman (Mr E. H. Andrews): It is a serious matter to put men off, but this is the Board's decision, and it must consider its finances first. Mr Sykes is not quite right when he says that there has been no reduction in staff. There have been reductions in staff, salaries, and wages. The report was adopted, Mrs McCombs. and Messrs Sykes and ..Walter dissenting.
