Miss Eileen Ryau, who has been a member of the ofiiee staff of the "Greymouth Evening Star" for the past, three years, and has resigned, was met by tbo staff 011 Saturday and presented with a suitcase and umbrella. H ie manager, Mr A. J. Wilson, made the presentation. Mr J. M. Docherty, of the Greymoutli Telephone Exchange, who has been transferred to Wakefield, was met by the Post Office staff on Saturday and presented with a gold wristlet watch. The presentation was made by Mr A. I. Flett, Chief Postmaster. Mr and Mrs 11. C. llelTernan, who have been spending a holiday in Timaru and Duuedin, returned on Saturday. N. E. MeC'lurg, who has been on a visit to the Chatham Islands, has _returned to duty at the Grey Hospital. The Mines. The Dobson Mine, which has worked full time since it reopened on Februaiy loth, has sufficient orders fur a week's full work this week, Blackball Mines have experienced full time for several weeks, with a prospect qf a continuance. The Liverpool Mine (State) will work to-dny, but the James (State) will be idle. The Wallsend Mine will work full time again this week. Miner's Escape. While working at his claim on the Roa road, Him-!; ball, Mr 1L Marsdcn had a lucky escape from death when n charge of gelignite exploded. He had been removing a miss-shot with a hollow tap rod, and went to a fire to burn out what appeared to be a bit of stick, which proved to be some of the gelignite out of the hole. This exploded, the stick being blown to pieces, Mr Marsdon being severely cut about the face, arms, and legs. Magistrate's Court. A sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held in Reefton on Friday, Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., presiding. John Gerrish was fined 5s and costs 12s for failing to pay his unemployment levy. The Court was engaged most of the day in hearing the claim by W. .1. Morris against the Consolidated Gobifields, Ltd., for £2500 for the removal of sands and minerals oft a mining lease held by plaintiff. Decision was reserved. Picnic. The annual picnic of the West Coast Ilugby League Centre was held yesterday at liapahoe beach in glorious sunshine, and was attended by a record number of nearly 4000. An excursion train left in the morning, and another after the arrival of the Corsair Bay excursion from Christchurch, a number of excursionists by the latter train making the visit to Rapahoe. During the afternoon a sports programme was . run off, the main events being the following:— Men's Open Handicap—Final: O'Council (Runanga) 1, Devonport 2. League Championship—Final: O'Connell (Runanga) 1, Becks (Brunner) 2. Footballers' Relay Race—Runanga I, Marist 2. Theft from Fruitgrower. A young man, Malcolm Frederick Nottage, pleaded guilty at the Magistrate's Court on Saturday, to a charge of failing to account for £8 7s lid, the property of a fruit-grower and farmer in Nelson. The evidence showed that defendant bad been selling fruit on commission and had kept the money. He was convicted and ordered to eonic up for sentence if called upon within two years, and ordered to pay the money back within six months. OObden Football Club; ' The'Cobden Football Club held a gala in the Cobden Domain on Saturday. The weather was beautifully fine and there was a large attendance. Swimming Marathon. Mrs Elsie Fraser, the West Cou.-t woman swimmer, broke her own endurance record yesterday iu the Blackball baths, swimming continuously for seven and a half hours. Slie entered the water at II a.m. and concluded at 6.30 p.m., beating her previous record by I half iin hour. The day was ideal for | the effort, and a large number visited the bath during the day to witness the i swimming. Mrs Fraser averaged 44 strokes to the minute throughout, and left the water without assistance. Bowling. A match between Runanga (the holders) and Greymouth (the challengers) took place ou the Greymouth Bowling , Club's gretfn on Saturday, when the | Greymouth team won the Reynolds' 1 badges from Runanga by 105 points to 99. The winning rink, which 'was, after the game, presented with the badges, was Angus, Ferguson. Brislane, Mercer (s), who beat Keyes, Armstrong, Barnes, and Kroening (s) 30-16: In a colts* match, Greymouth beat Runanga 22-18. The Greymouth team was: Heyes, Robertson, Pearson, and Morrison (s), and Runanga. Smith, Parkes, Gallon, and Hardy (s). Roading at Harihari. ! The Westland County Council has received word that Mr H. H. Wedding. The wedding took place at Hokitika on Saturday of Jessie Matilda, eldest ' daughter of Mr and Mrs T. Merriman. of Runanga, and Albert George David. ' third son of Mr and Mrs J. Muir, of Arahura. The bridal couple and their friends were entertained at the residence of the bridegroom's parents. Mr and Mrs Muir leaving later for Run anga. Women's institute. The annual meeting of the Greymouth branch of the Women's Institute ,wus held on Friday, when the following were elected officers for . the ensuing year:— President, Mrs Black; vice-presidents: Mesdames Lindop, Phillips, and Robertson; secretary, Mrs Tilleyshort; treasurer, Mrs Perrin; committee: Mesdames Thompson, Tilleyshort, Peek, Gilmore, Congreve, Louisson. The final match in the West Coast Senior Championship was played yesterday between Marist (winners of the northern division), and Kanieri (winners of the southern division). In the B Division, at Kamaka yesterday the home team suffered defeat at the hands of Kumara, wha gained a three point win. Brunner defeated Camerons at Dobson yesterday, winning by five wickets. Cobden A drew with United' B. The outstanding features of the game were the splendid stand by Knapp and Barlow, who gave fine displays for 117, and 71 not out, respectively.
