Owing to his not reahsmg that Play would be possible, K. Bryan, the lead ng player of the team, was not s . ee °. W e i nßin the doubles on Saturday, his place being taken by C. Mollison, the manager, who proved a very capable volley er. . gher, the second player, proved sound and aggressive in all departments of t g > while L. McKinnon and A. Feathers, not possessing quite the same ease of a production, were little less effective. All of thom camped on the net in great style, wane few better exhibitions of smashing have been seen here recently than that of Feathers. The women players, too, showed sound tennis ability, although lacking in variety of strokes. Miss D. Miller impressed as n tenacious defending player, Mrs Borrie both volleved and drove with judgment, and Miss D. Baikie and Miss K. Weavers combined steady and accurate ground strokes with the ability to press home from the net advantages so gained. The best of the mixed doubles games was that between JfißS Miller and Feathers and Mrs Macdonald and Dymond. Losing the first set to a combination who defended resolutely and took advantage of every opening, the Canterbury pair had to struggle hard for the second set, although the third was decisively theirs. In the first men's doubles Mollison and Gallagher volleyed finely in the opening set, but lost their accuracy as Patterson found hiß. McKinnon nad Feathers crowded the net at every opportunity to take the first set from Dymond and A'Court, and caught up from 0-5 to 8-all in the second. Misses Wake and Rudkin were too severe for the visiting pair, Mrs Borrie and Miss Baikie, in the first women's doubles, but Misses Miller and Weavers took the second set to love against Mrs Macdonald and Miss 1. Poole. The game between Misses Wake and Miller was keenly contested, and dpysloped into a steady struggle, in which the North Otago player cam« out with most of the points. Miss Wake gained only two games. The results were as follows: ! MEN'S SINGLES. 11. A. Barnett (C.) beat K. Bryaa (1f.0.) 6-4, 6-2. T. W. Patterson (0.) beat IV Gallagher (N. 0.), 6-2, 9-7. H.
