♦ PERSONAL. (SPECIAL TO TB* PRESS.) " GBEYMOUTH, March 6. Mr R. Holland, a son of Mr and Mrs H. E. Holland, has arrived at Westport front Australia on a visit to his parents. The Rev. H. H. Barton, a former Presbyterian Minister at. Westport, is i visiting that town. Mr R. 8. 'Brittenden. District Traffic Inspector for Railways, is. visiting the West Coast. Miss Rita Johnson, who has been visiting friends in Greymouth, returned yesterday to Christchurch. Dr. J. F. C. Moore, medical superintendent at the Grey Hospital, left on Friday via Nelson for Auckland, where he will attend the medical conference. Air and Mrs W. E. Rolfe (Wellington) are visiting the West Coast. % Miss E. Bayley (Auckland) is spending a holiday on the West Coast. Mrs Chas. Rugg, who has been visiting Christchurch has returned to Greymouth. Obituary. The death has occurred at Westpoi't of Mrs Lucy Ann Paterson, aged 67 years. Mrs Paterson "was a native of Victoria and h\d resided in New' Zealand for 27 years. She is survived by one son and one daughter. Bowling. The Westport Bowling Club's rink championship was won by Sara's rink, who beat Knight's, 25 to 10, on the 19th head. The winning rink was Hart, Mitchell, Hackhurst, and Sara (s). Accidents. While working in the bush at Hukarere, Gordon Wilson, a sawmill hand, cut a foot severely while chopping a tree. He was admitted to the Grey Hospital. An accident happened to Mr John Heeney, a bushman employed at the United Sawmills, Ltd., at Te Kinga on Thursday. He was engaged trimming the branches off a fallen tree, when the axe 'slipped, cutting through a boot. Several stitches f were inserted. Borough Council. The Greymouth Borough Council met last Thursday evening, the' Mayor Mr J. W. Greenslade, presiding. The McLean Park Committee wrote asking the Council to agree to the removal of the bank rotunda in Mackay street to the Park, as it was an impediment, to street traffic. < The borough engineer reported that the value of building permits issued for the month ended February 29th totalled £2985, six of these being for the erection of dwellings. He reported also, that the reservoir had been kept full with an average pumping of eight hours. The maximum pressure in the town had been 841b. Acclimatisation. The monthly meeting of the Westland Acclimatisation Society was held on Thursday evening at Hokitika, the president, Dr. Teichelmann, presiding. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote for a recommendation regarding the opossum season. It was decided to recommend that the close season be continued for another year. Notice was received that the Bird Protection Society had objected to the close season for deer. It was resolved to reply that the c'.ose season in Westland was outy made to
apply to remote parts of the district in which it was required that properly equipped parties would go. If stalkers were not encouraged to go into the country very little shooting would take place, and deer would increase more rapidly than was now possible. The Southland Society wrote'offering the Society brown trout ova at 4s a 1000. It ,was decided to confer with the Grey District Society regarding requirements, and to order accordingly.It was decided to apply for the usual quantity of quinnat ova for . Lake Kanieri. ' Ross Borough. The election for the purpose of filling a vacancy in the Jloss Borough Council caused by the retirement of Cr. J. Thomson, resulted in the election pf Mr H. Osmers, who defeated Mr B. J. Scott by 62 votes. Prefects Invested. The first ceremony in connexion with the installation of prefects at the Grey Main School took place on Thursday. The prefects' badges were pinned on by Miss E. Moore, senior mistress, assisted by Miss B. Cornwall. Swimming. A meeting of the West Coast Swimming Centre was held on Thursday evening, the chairman, Mr H. Rattray, presiding. Challenges were received from AVestport and Cobden for the John Burns Challenge Cup, which is held by the I Grey Club. ' | The action of the chairman iti allowing the sum of £1 Is towards the expenses of the school girls who .made the trip to Westport to compete for the Tennent Cup was approved. Mr Geo. i Walters, who represented the Association at the New Zealand Conference, gave a report-on proceedings. Jockey Club. A meeting of the Grey District Committee was held on Friday, the chairman, Mr T. E. Coates, presiding. Mr Coates was delegated to attend the special meeting of the District Racing Committee prior to the meeting of the Racing Conference, at Wellington on March 16th. The following applications were recommended:—Trainers' licenses: R. Cutbush (Westport), W. (Greymouth), Ronald Morris (Karamea), C. R. Menzies (Westport), and L. A. Young, permission to work in a stable.- ' At the conclusion of the District Committee meeting, the ordinary meeting of the Greymouth Jockey Club was held, the chairman, Mr T. E. Coates, presiding. Advice ' was received that Mr A- A. Besley, of Christchureh, had been appointed totalisator inspector for the forthcoming West Coast < racing circuit. An application for a non-totalisator •meeting from Karamea Club, was approved and passed on to the conference for consideration. It was stated that the Club had held no meeting for several years, and this was for the pur£Ose of reinstating the meetings in Karamea. It was reported that good progress was being made with a temporary stand at the Grey racecourse, at Omoto. in preparation for the autumn Meeting. School Committee. The Grey Main School Committee met on Friday evening, the chairman, Mr R. A. Barrowman, presiding. The headmaster, Mr J. Graham, reported that the number of pupils on the roll was:—Grey Main, 574; Blaketown side, 78. The dental nurse, Miss Thomson, reported 44 operations for January, and 139 during February.
A letter was received from Mr A. D. Bryce, Supervisor of District Clinics, stating that there was no chance of s vote being granted at present fox alterations to the clinic,, th? Department not being able to assist though, approving of the proposed alterations'.
