BROADSIDING.

KEEN RACING. TRACK RECORD ATTEMPTS. In spite of the fact that there was a light rain falling during half the programme, a fair-sized crowd stayed, to the finish of ah interesting and exciting evening . of broadsiding at Monica Park Stadium on Saturday. The chief attraction on the programme was the joint appearance in match races of W. Kilmister, of Wellington, Cyril Anderson, of Australia, and «C. Blacklock, of Canterbury, and in addition two attempts were made to lower the flying mile record for the track. It was a good night's sport with few • falls and some very close contests. In the first division handicap, the" Wellington champion, Kilmister, recorded a splendid performance to score a. handsome win from scratch. G. Farmer, who has already earned a fine reputation at the head of the second division, rode a good race to take second place. The second division handicap was won by R. Nelson, who was making .his first appearance in races. He had been given 5 seconds start, so, that the handicapper must have considered him a little better than most second division riders in their first race, but he and the crowd must have received a pleasant surprise to see the newcomer win both heat and final easily. It would appear that Nelson may develop into a good rider. He had a few. anxious moments in his races on Saturday, but made remarkably good recoveries. The Big Three Points Race of three heat 3 between" Kilmister, Anderson, and Blacklock produced some good match racing, but Kilmister had . a very clear-cut victory with two firsts and a second. Unfortunately Anderson was not able to ride in the last heat as ' his machine broke down. Blacklock had no competition when he won the final heat as Kilmister's machine did not function properly. Blacklocb's riding generally was nV>ig disappointment. He seemed to have lost most of. the form he displayed in the middle stages of this season. It should be mentioned in fairness to Anderson that it was obviously lack of machine jDower rather than lack of riding ability that allowed Kilmister to win comfortably. A further meeting would be interesting. T» 1 he other match races Laurie Packer beat R. Ranby, T. Tompkins beat N. Gray, and J. Hobson beat J. Oakley. Ea-ch was quite a good match, aiid it was a coincidence that each was won in Imm 25sec. The. Speedway Scratch Race, the final event, resulted in a good win for Packer. Strangely enough, the final resulted in the winners of the three match races ..mentioned above,, meeting on level terms, Packer won fairly easily, while Tompkins'• had r.o opposition tor second place when Hob-" son fell, and . pushed. home for third money. C. Anderson had very bad/ luck in his attempt on the record for the flying mile at present held by "Squib" Burton in Imin 17 3-ssec. * He was riding well and just going into the final slide when his tyre came off, and ho spilled. His times announced were: Firs't lap I.9sec, second lap IS 3-osee, third lap 19sec„ Thus if Anderson had

completed the final lap in 19sec, "wjuch ' he appeared to be certain to, eH>~. lie ! would have< broken all records' and hoisted tile rrerti ark able time of lmin 15 3-usec for/the flying mile—a' magnificent performance. This fall seemed to nffect Anderson's mount. a Kilmi<rtor also made an attempt on I vltc iecord;;; but ' after -a ride in which there was a slight lack of steadiness, he'' put up the pood, performance of lmin 19 cTbe.-. fastest time of this* season was limn 18 4-ssec, established by Dicky Case", so that Kilmister's time' was qui te- cteditable. * ' The following: 'were the detailed ' results:— : ; , -"iS 1 FIRST DIVISION HANDICAP, Pour laps, One, mile..
