CITY RATES.

TO THB EDITOR Of TUB VRSiS. Sir,—l notice in to-day's issue of 'J ke , Pres% a • letter signed by "Worker," and although he should have known better than to expect the City Council offices to be open after the tick of 4 p.m.', my sympathies are with him. It is only reasonable to assume that the ratepayers who are responsible for keeping the Council employees in their comparatively easy positions, should bo shown consideration. i agree th.it it is a Christian act to look after our harassed Council office staff, in the way of allowing them to close the public ofhee at 4 p.m. each day, but why not do as any trading firm docs, and instead of making things as difficult as possible for the ratepayers when paying their rates, keep opuii till, say, 5.30 each evening and 1.30 p.m. on Saturdays. The Council employees' have been pampered long enough, and' "Worker's" remark about the staff having half nn hour in which to prepare to go home is not far from tho mark.

Witli regard to the Town Clerk's offer to receive the cash and "see that an official receipt is forwarded in the morning." this shows truly a magnanimous spirit. Why should the Town Clerk make a in.irt,vr of himself ? Surely-he has n staff to do such menial work as receiving the rates. —Yours, etc., HEMO. March 4th, IC3-.
