THE DOMAIN. During the past month six men have been employed under tho No. 5 Schemo j cleaning up the domain on Sawyer's Arms road. Most of the time has been taken up in removing the old stumps along the road frontage. The stumps are of little or no use for firewood, and the Board is faced with the difficulty in disposing of them. It is intended to plant a border of low-growing shrubs, and the Board would bo grateful of any assistance in this direction. Members of tho Sports Club have offered to supervise -the work in banking the corners of the cycle track. ' Card Evening. A "500" evening, in aid of the cake stall at tho forthcoming Waimairi School fete, was held in the Papanui Buildings on Wednesday. The winners were Mrs J. L. Neilson and Mr W. Perera. Tennis Trophies Presented. There was a good attendance at a social and dance held by the Waimairi Tennis Club in the Papanui Buildings. During the evening the trophies won during the year were presented by Mr A. 3yme. The Hart Cup (ladies' championship) was won by Miss R. Hookham; the ladies' handicap singles by Miss D. Roberts; tho men's handicap singles by H. Tillman; and the tournament prizes by A. Pullon and Miss Johnstone. Mr A. Syme offered a cup for the winner of tho men's championship. The president, Mr G. Radford, thanked Mr Syme for his offer, and stated that the first year at tho new'courts had been most successful. The committee intended laying down a further three courts, in tho near future. Music for tho dancing was played by Mr Fred Gomyns, and extras by Mrs G. Radford and Mr Ockleshaw. Songs were sung by Miss I. Hill. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs C. L. Palmer. Mr F. Longley acted as M.C. Leap Year Dance.
The Memorial Hall was crowded on Monday evening when the Papanui Tennis Club held a leap year dance. There were nearly four hundred dancers present. Music was supplied by Les Grummitt's Band and extras w ®' e played by Miss Audrey Black ana Mr Cyril Smith. Monte Carlo dances were won by Miss E. Croton and Mr Croton, and Mrs M. Barndin and Mr, B. Wilson. Mr C. Hawley was M.C. Choirmaster Welcomed. A complimentary supper to the choir and a welcome to the new choirmaster (Mr 11. Queroe) were tendered by the trustees of the Papanui Methodist Church ou Wednesday evening. - The Rev. A. .Hopper said he was very pleased to extend a welcome to Mr Queree as choirmaster, and hoped that his stay at Papanui would bo a happy one. Mr Hopper also spoke of the great services rendered by Mr W. Salkeld, who had worked hard and filled the gap, since the departuro of Mr O. M. Jones from the district. Miss C Craig, secretary of the choir, spoke of Mr Salkeld s work for the choir.
The Rev. A. Peters also welcomed Mr Queree and gave some interesting reminiscences of choir work of past days. Mr Twose replied on behalf of the choir. Mr Queree, in acknowledging the welcome, said he felt sure he would find himself among friends. A pianoforte solo was given by Miss Osborne and vocal solos by Misses V. Black and S. Harris, and Mr W. Salkeld. A duet was given by Miss T. Craig and Mr lan Hopper. A competition was won by Miss Willmer. A Presentation. Mr David Edmonds for some years licensee of the Hotel Carlton was entertained on Thursday evening by a number of his Papanui and other friends. Regrot- was expressed at his departure from the district and best wishes wero extonded for his future welfare. Mr Edmonds was presented with a combination smoking companion and bridge set, and his son Mr Jolin Edmonds was given a silver pencil.
