UNIVERSITY FEES.
BURSARY REDUCTIONS. STUDENTS EMBARRASSED. For many students of Canterbury College, the pleasures of the Capping Carnival last wsejt were to some extent spoiled by the announcement from the Registrar's office that the bailee of lecture fees-nnjpt Ije paid a 3 s°° n as possible. At the beginning of the term the Canterbury College Registrar did not enforce fijll payment of fees by the usual date of March 12th, as fiope was still entertained that there would bo somo result from the Joan? protests against the Government's action in announcing ft 5Q per cent, reduction of bursarifcs after students had been committed to their course of studies for the year, Apparently there is no possibility of the Department of Education reconsidering its decision and deferring the reduction nntiMiqrt year, when bursars will Itjiyp sufficient noticp to arrange their affairs accordingly. Protests were immediately -made to the Prime Minister and the Minister for Education by tho Students' Associations of each of the four colleges, and by the New Zealand National Union of Students, Thert) were also representations from the Board qf Gqverr nprs of Canterbury College, and of the oilier colleges, with the exception of Auckland. It was realised that economy was necessary, and the protests were not sq inueh against the drastic red'ictjon, as against its enforcement. this session. Demand for Payment. A notice on the college board asks for payment of the balance of fees ns soon as possible, but at the latest before Juno Ist. Since the first vacafciou •of three weeks commenced oh Saturday. many students have loft for their homes in the country or in the North Island, so notices hava also been sent to tlie home addresses of those bursars concerned. The amount of the "cut" varies, and is in no q&ge greater tljan £lO, but with the payment of diploma fees an 4 examination fees all coming about tho beginning of May, many students, who have kept on at their subjects in the hope that the reduction would not bo enforced, after all this year, will be hard put to it to find the necessary money.
