NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. The fortnightly, meeting of the Druids Lodge was held on Monday evening. Bro. P. Quartly presided. A motion of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Bro. W. Stone. Bro. George Bridges presented a framed enlarged photo of his father, the late 'William Bridges, who was ono of the foundation members of the Order. The photo was received with thanks, a,nd was hung up in the Lodge room. The agenda paper for the Grand Lodge session was again discussed, visitors, from Ghri§tchurch explaining certain proposed amendments. Jt was reported that Bro. H. Chambers, who recently met with an accident, was on the road to recovery. Sick pay amounting to £4 18s 4d was passed for payment.

KAIAPOL The quarterly meeting of the Kaiapoi District Licensing Committee was held in the Courthouse, Kaiapoi, yesterday. Present: The chairman, Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., Messrs J. W. Barnard, J. Brydert, G. Shipley, W. P. i Spencer, and J. G. Yellowlces. Application for a permanent transfer of the license of the Belfast Hotel to K. H. Smith, was granted. With reference to the Phoenix' Hotel, Papanui, Mr F. Sargent, on behalf of the licensee (W. J. Ives) stated , that two convictions, neither i of ,a serious character, had been re-! corded against the hotel. The alleged j after-hour trading was only a suspicion, and lie could assure the committee that the licensee had taken notice of the warning and was not doing any after-hour trading. Inspector A, Cameron said that the present was not a time for a serious objection, but if the house was not better conducted between now and the • June meeting, a more serious view would be taken. The chairman stated that the committee would expect considerable improvement between now and next meeting. The committee was disappointed that the licensee had placed himself in this position, lie being an experienced publican. If the conduct of the hotel was not'improved between now and the annual meeting in June ; the committee would be obliged to give the matter of renewing the license very serious consideration. With regard to the Pier Hotel, Kaiapoi, Mr W. J. Hunter, for the licensee (Mrs Bawken), stated that the license had been transferred to Mrs Hawken last Juno. Since then ono conviction of supplying liquor after hours had been made. The police had b.?en constantly watching the hotel, and the suggestion that after-hour trading and Supplying prohibited persons had taken place was only a suspicion. At a recent meeting of the Horticultural Society it' was decided to abandon the annual summer show this year,' Mr John McGuire, accompanied by Mrs McGuire, leaves shortly for a trip to the Old Country. A demonstration of the difference between. Canadian and New Zealand cheese was given Dy Mr ■S. Clayton, Government grader, at • Barry's Bay factory on Monday.
