LIFE-SAVING.

SUMNER CLUB. MAYORAL CUP COMPETITION. The Sumner Life-Saving and Surf Bathing Club held its annual competition for'the .Mayoral .Oup on Saturday afternoon. Five teams entered. The water conditions gave an average break of about four rollers,, with a fair swim to the buoy. The competition was a four-man event for beltman. lineman, reelman, and subject. It included waterwork and resuscitation. Beginning as an alarm call it immediately made heavy demands on the beltman, and called for much judgment on the part of the lineman, in the "carry-in" after the "take over"; the responsibility lay with the reelman and the lineman. All teams gave, n good exhibition of tvaterwork, and general skill. , The time for the swim out varied from 2miu 37 l-ssec to 3min 31 l-ssec by the first team, which was handicapped by not knowing the direction of the drift. . ■' '. Results were as follows: —

Tj. Sutherland (belt), Miles (reel), C. McPhail (line and resuscitator), 91. 2-3 points, Ist. This team was the fourth to go out. Sutherland made the fastest time by taking a direct line for the subject, and was well supported by both line and reel. N. McPhail, J. Mitchell (reel). Clark (line and resuscitator), and K. J. Lowry (belt)', Bates (reel). Claydon (line and resuscitator), tied with 87 points each, second. McPhail's team, the last to go, got away well, the beltman swimming strongly, supported by good reel and line work. The | subject was well looked after, and resuscitation was' good. , Lowry's team made a smart run out. The time was good, the lineman Working efficiently in deep water to minimise the pull of-.the 'northerly drift on th 6 beltman's line. ■ S; G. Henry (belt), Cuming (reel), A. Dawe (line and resuscitator), IV points, tliirdi ■ Henry's , team madej a smart getaway, the beltman making rather too much allowance for thp drift. The lineman gave valuable: assistance in doep water during the "pay-out" and the take over was done well. ! Q. Gv Wood (belt), Johnson (reel), and Blake (line and resuscitator)* were the first to respond to the alarm. T"®y i discovered a heavy drift to the nhrth imposing a big handicap on the beltman. I The instructor for all teams was Mr. | N. G. Winter. The officials were:— Referee, Mr S. K. Bassett: judges, k Messrs G. F. Allen, and J. Breward; | time-keepers, Messrs G. Mcllroy and J. Darrooh.' At- the conclusion, the' club president,.Mr S. K. "Bassett, announced ihe i results.' and invited the judges to; 1 comiflent on the work. He apologised I for the absence of the donor of' the cup. Mr W. H. Nicholson, and for Mr F. J. INTEH-CLUB CONTESTS. j Yesterday th.e Canterbury Sur£ Association I held - three .Canterbury life-saving ehampionI ships at Sumner, the Sumner Cup, ,a four- ! mail event, and Benson Shield, a junior I event; and the Kay Blank- Cup, both aeVenmen events. The contest- started . before lunch, «nd was completed about five o'clock. I There was: a record ! entry ol teams, with i almost record weather conditions, and the largest attendance of spectators seen at ner for any life-savins event. Throughout tha day the light surf of the morning decreased to almost a calm with the falling tide, abd the competitions with the-buoy a long way out, resolved themselves into speed in smooth water. Many of the men being in good training ' for the Nelson Cnp meeting at Wanganuf, the teams were very lit, 'and included fast ' 'reps.,'' such as Herd, and the leading swimmers of . Canterbury! ■ All Events were alarm events, with, a full ballot-for .places, which in maqy instances resulted in the "star performers" selecting minor positions. It was the big day of the year, for the Canterbury Sun Club, and all contestants showed an increasingly intelligent interpretation ' ol the varying conditions affecting" belt, line, and reel. ' Throughout, the linesmen afforded: the beltman. the maximum support, and resuscitation was evenly good. The Sumner Cup, -wit.il eleven, entries, was contested before lunch, New Brighton No. 1 winning with fastest time.■ - The Benson Shield began immediately after, and was won by New Brighton No. 2. The Bay Blank Cup, which was Won by Taylor's Mistake, was last, and had , the . largest • number of entries. In this' liothDalton sndStokes drew minor position*. The following were the .officials:—Marshal and organiser, Mr D. V. Wilson; judges, Snmner Cup and, Hay Blank "Cup, MeSsrg W.H. Benson, G. Fe&rce, and H. S.'Feast; referees, Mr S. K.
