' , Peferring to the activities of the ,past year, Mr Francis said that the club's thanks were'.due to -Messrs G. .Humphreys and 3, Montgomery for the land on which' was the • new Crossways, tee , The Greens Committee had been' - tiro.less in their efforts, andlhad done every l : thing .possible to improve the course. The fairways were mfcch better,' very excellent 'work on the greens' htfd been carried out in very unfavourable 'pircumstances. As. they .were awarej the New Zealand championships were to be held on'the Shirley links between October 15th and 2ith, and they had only to hope ' for .good weather, and that the committee would have tlie course ip splendid, order, for the championships, .and, they would keep up .the popularity of their links. Some Old-Time Incidents. ,4 He had been lookingthrough some'of the older records, and it was wonderful the Strides made in golf inf New Zealand since 1893. In that 'year the Otago Clul) wrote to the Christchurch Club suggesting an inter-club championship at .Dunedin, and asked the Christchurch Club to make a grant towards the cost of tho Challenge Cap. The members of the Christchurch Club always were good sports, and though their total revenud was only £.75,, they vdted £5 ss. This was reported to have been the start of the N,ew Zealand championships, and on " that occasion the Christchurch Club,was represented by Dr. Gosset and "Messrs 'Charlewpod and Wilder. The next year the championships tfere held on Higley Park, and the following year, at the Hutt. In that year Mr W. Hafman joined the club—(applause)—and "he -was still going, strong, as also .was Mr > Kitto. It they could only get the reminiscences of those old . Members > regarding the past thirty-fivfi years of golf they would be very interesting. In 1901 the club's total expenditure was £305, and by .the end of the year they irere SCO *to the bad. . The assets included a travelling hut, £4s} and plant and everything else wits valued at £2O; out standing subscriptions' totalled £15., In 1905 golf was going ahead, and members' subscriptions amounted to £462, aS against £2OO in 1901. Things ■ .had igrown till the revenue was over £4OOQ j yet it was almost impossible,,to make ends meet at present.
