w ■ ■ CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION •MEETS. meeting of the executive of the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association was held last night,. Mr I. Woolf, presiding. The chairman referred to the earthquake at Hawke's Bay, and stated that many manufacturers had lost very heav-' ilyl The Association's Emergency Committee decided to circularise mem- ; bers with a suggestion that their cmi ployees should be invited to contribute i half a day's pay if on full pay, with. a. | relative subsidy by the firms themselves. A.'good response had been made. ; The Cbristclrarch Technical'. College, wrote thanking the Association " for, its annual grant of £lO 10s to the Collego funds. , ' -
Shopping Week. The, organiser (Mr E. H. Marriner) reported that v arrangements were being made to carry out on a large scale a New Zealand Shopping Week display, at Christchurch. The date decided upon' by - the committee, at the Suggestion of the Betail Drapers' Association,wwass s from Apfil 13th. to 18t,h, 1931, the first week after Easter, Circulars were being sent out to ,all the retailers, also to members of the Association, asking that . they 'co-operate t'o, make this .New j Zealand Week a great success. There I 'were a number of empty shops in the 1 City, and- the organiser would endeavi our >to obtain permission to use some ' of these to make a display of "New Zea- ! land-made goods. Electrical Goods. •' A conference was held on February 19th between members of the Association, the electrical manufacturers, and the municipal electricity department. Thanks were "due from the Association to the Department for allowing the Association to placer its views before* the City Council Electricity Committee. *- new range, manufactured locally, was displayed for the benefit of the department, and after discussion the chairman I of, the Electricity Committee gave the I Association to understand that every J consideration would.be given to their ..proposals. It.was suggested by the, Department that one of these ranges should 1 be tested at a laboratory such as Can- [ terbury College, to prove its efficiency. I Tho suggestion -was accepted ar.d arI rangements were now being made for ! the range to be tested by an outside i expert. The Association felt that the i department was'trying to its "best 1 to . assist the New Zealand , electrical manufacturers- to place their good *on the'local market.
Since the 'previous report enquiries had been received from members of the Association in regard to rebates on machinery used for manufacturing purposes, The matter was being investigated and a report would 1)e submitted on it at an* early date. The report was adopted.
