* t EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. i ' '\ ■< ' FIRE AT AUCKLAND^ (TBCBB ASUOCWnOV TBUNMUV.) AUCKLAND, February 21. Fire broke out this afternoon in the Macky Logan Building in Lome street, where considerable damage was caused. The outbreak was at one end of the building, where the following firms have premises:— .' ' The Auckland Millinery' Factory. i Tattley and Company. New Zealand Knitted-Wear, Ltd. Plummer Hat Company, Ltd. V Singer Sewing Machine Company. When" the Brigade arrived, .the top 1 floor was- in flames and a cloud of white smoke was drifting over the immediate I area. 'l'he firemen climbed on to ..the root , from the Wakefield street frontage and, gained entry to the Jjuilding. Owing to the dense smoke inside, there, was some difficulty in getting at "the seat of the fire., ; "The premises of the Auckland Millinery' Factory were absolutely gutted' before the Brigade arrived,*' said the Deputy ' Superintendent, Mr Avenell. ''A large stock of millinery was destroyed and, about 40 power sewing .machines were badly damaged." '. The principal of the firm,' Mr Zukerman, said about 40 girls. were employed. The premises of the firms on lower floors were slightly damaged by water. OUTBREAKS IN CITY. An outbreak, of fire occurred shortly after, midday yesterday at the Salvation Army Men's Home at Addington, when a large shed adjacent to.the home, con-, taining about 200' bales of used paper, was considerably damaged. The shed is about' (30 yards long, and was used for storing old paper, which ig collected from the City, packed in Scwt bales, and sent to the paper.'milles at Mataura. The fire apparently started in the west end and quickly spread through the paper, the .Christohurch Brigade having to remove most of the bales—a difficult undertaking—before the flames could be got under control. Two motor-cars were removed undamaged from the east end of the shed before the fire had gained a serious hold. V The shed and its contents were extensively damaged. The shed was insured in the Atlas Company, but it is thought that the contents were not covered by. insurance. FIRE IN SCHOOL-GROUND; Fire damaged a raacrocarpa hedge on the south-east side of the Opawa School-ground on Saturday afternoon.. - The fire originated from a stack of dry grass which was being' burned in a small enclosure near the hedge. . The fire spread through the,stubble, and into the hedge, and it was some fame before men from the Chnstchurch Fire Brigade could extinguish the outbreak, RACING TROPHIES DESTROYED.' (rasss associatio* ml*o»aii.) - . DTJNEDIN, February 21. Mr E. M. Greenslade's twelve-roomed bouse In Elm row was the scene of a fire to-day, and one room was gutted. Many racing trophies were destroyed. Insurances on the building are £3OOO in the Yorkshire Office, and on the cpntents £990. ■
